“But the question’s about recently,” Camilla said, defensively.
“Recently means the closest time to now.” Garrison pressed.
Camilla’s brows knit together. “I honestly don’t remember.”
Garrison opened his mouth to push further, but Lambert cut in with a calm, “That’s enough.”
His tone made it obvious he was taking her side. Garrison shut right up. The rest of the group followed suit. Case closed, or at least for now.
No one expected the bottle to land on Camilla a second time.
Catheleen just stared. “Cammie, what kind of luck is that? I couldn’t help you even if I wanted to.”
Whispers started circulating, everyone quietly speculating about Camilla and Lambert. None of them had ever seen Lambert stand up for a woman. Not even Catheleen, and she was practically untouchable because of her family’s status.
Still, Lambert’s reaction just now was different. Very different. Suddenly, everyone’s curiosity kicked into high gear.
As the bottle pointed to Camilla again, the cheers got louder.
Catheleen threw her hands up. “What is this? Seriously, you’re not rigging it, are you?”
The guy spinning lifted his shoulders, acting all innocent.
“A bet’s a bet!”
“Come on, rules are rules!”
Camilla gave a nervous laugh. “It’s okay. I’ll take truth.”
Garrison moved closer with the cards, letting her pick. He grabbed her drawn card and read, “Was the last person you were intimate with in this room?”
Laughter broke out around the table.
Camilla didn’t reply, so Garrison reminded her, “If you don’t answer, you have to drink.”
Catheleen rushed to her defense. “Cammie only just got over a cold. She was on an IV drip. She’s not supposed to drink.”
“Then she has to answer,” someone called out.
Camilla could feel her face burning. She stared down at her lap, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes.
Lambert just said, “Truth.”
Garrison handed him the stack of cards. “Would you look at that. Lambert’s really getting into this game.”
Lambert picked a card. He barely looked at it before passing it to Garrison.
Garrison read, grinning, “Have you ever fantasized about doing unspeakable things with someone you like?”
The room lost it—everyone cracked up.
Catheleen muttered under her breath, “What’s with these questions tonight?” But deep down even she wanted to know if someone like Lambert, who always seemed so above desire, actually had those kinds of thoughts.
Every eye turned on Lambert, hungry for an answer.
Camilla watched him too, heart pounding.
Lambert didn’t look at anyone. He lowered his gaze to the glass in front of him, his expression unreadable. The silence stretched. Then, finally, he spoke.
