"Why."
Every day, countless things happened in this world. But not everything came with a clear "why." Just like Lambert White in this very moment.
He couldn't say, *I want to help you because... I care about you.*
"Care" required a certain level of closeness. The distance between two hearts.
And right now, without a doubt, Camilla Green's heart was still miles away from his.
He didn't even have the right to care.
Camilla preempted his excuses, leaving him no way out. "Don't say it's because of Catheleen. I'm not her only friend, and I've never seen you care this much about anyone else."
She had completely anticipated his arguments and blocked off his retreat.
Lambert knew very well he couldn't confess his true feelings right now.
Doing so would only push her further away.
He spoke calmly, "You being Catheleen's friend is one reason. The other... I admit, because of our two intimate encounters, I feel I owe you. That's why I want to help."
Sometimes, mixing half-truths with reality made it easier for people to believe.
"Even though neither time was intentional on your part," he continued, "men don't exactly lose out in these situations. Maybe that's why I feel a bit guilty."
Lambert finished speaking and glanced at her.
Visibly, Camilla relaxed a fraction.
She accepted this logic.
Lambert's reasoning was so sound and grounded that she had no choice but to believe it.
She said, "Yes, traditionally speaking, women might be at more of a disadvantage. But for you, this was a completely unprovoked disaster. You don't need to feel like you owe me. I was the one in the wrong."
*Unprovoked disaster?*
To Lambert, those two encounters were unexpected blessings.
It was heaven's mercy and favoritism toward him.
