Faust quickly stepped in to smooth things over. "Lambert's just in a foul mood tonight, not really up for chatting. Jeanette, what do you want to drink? I'll pour you a glass!"

"I don't drink," Jeanette replied, secretly gritting her teeth but forcing her smile back into place. "I'm afraid of getting tipsy. If I go home drunk, I'll get an earful."

"As if Old Man Clark would ever scold you," Faust laughed. "You're the apple of his eye."

"Grandpa spoils me, sure, but he also expects me to act proper. A girl should always behave herself, shouldn't she?"

Faust sensed the passive-aggressive undertone in her words, but they weren't close enough for him to call her out on it. He just chuckled. "Come on, it's the twenty-first century. Men and women play by the same rules now. Anything a man can do, a woman can do. Don't put yourself in a box."

"Maybe. But I still believe that a girl with self-respect should keep herself in check."

Faust didn't know how to respond to that. He had a strong feeling she was taking veiled shots at someone, though he wasn't sure who. He simply offered a polite smile.

Beside him, Lambert didn't spare her a single glance.

The tension in the room was thick until Garrison brought his fiancée over to sit near them. The two women huddled together, whispering.

Faust shot Garrison a glaring look, silently mouthing, "Get them out of here."

Garrison shrugged helplessly, indicating there was nothing he could do.

Fortunately, the girls stopped trying to force a conversation. Lambert remained silently brooding in his own world, downing a few more glasses of liquor before resting his head against the back of the sofa. He draped his arm over his eyes, shutting out the room.

That was when Catheleen called.

Lambert's phone buzzed. He answered it, his voice rough and deep. "Catheleen."

"Lambert," Catheleen began, having mustered the courage to call him after getting nowhere with Camilla. "What happened between you and Cammie? After you left, she was crying."
