Not a single wrinkle marred the fabric. It was a perfect reflection of his flawless, untouchable life. So entirely different from the chaos of an ordinary person. No mess, no wrinkles, no imperfections.
Camilla offered a self-deprecating smile. "You should probably give her a call, Mr. White."
She moved to shut the door.
Lambert drank in the sight of her with a desperate hunger. Even after a full night, the corners of her eyes were still slightly red and swollen.
Had she been crying again? Why? Was it because of him?
A thousand questions burned in his throat, but he swallowed every single one. He had no right to ask.
"I came to pick up my cufflinks," he finally said.
It was just a pair of cufflinks. They weren't worth his time or the gas it took to get there. But he had come anyway. Just to look at her.
"Oh." Camilla turned around. "I'll go grab them."
She left the door open, assuming Lambert would wait in the hallway. After the horrible things she had said, she was certain he wanted nothing to do with her. If he had known she was home alone, he probably wouldn't have even come up.
But when she retrieved the small silk pouch and turned around, Lambert was already standing in the middle of the living room.
A wave of sheer panic and unease washed over her. She took two hesitant steps forward and placed the silk-wrapped cufflinks on the coffee table. "Here you go, Mr. White."
She immediately backed away, putting distance between them.
Meeting his gaze, she saw a deep, unreadable storm brewing in his striking eyes.
"Was there anything else, Mr. White?" she asked, a polite but firm dismissal.
Lambert's heart violently contracted. He looked at her, his entire being consumed by an overwhelming ache.
"Are your eyes... bothering you?" he finally asked, his voice thick. His slightly lowered lashes concealed a desperate, suffocating affection he couldn't put into words.
Camilla instinctively brought a hand to her eye.
Not wanting to admit he knew she'd been crying, Lambert quickly added, "They look a bit red."
"I'm fine," Camilla said, looking away. "If there's nothing else..."
