For a moment, everything stopped for him. Camilla’s arms slipped around his neck and suddenly she was so close, her whole body pressed up against him, and then she kissed him.
Her eyes were shut tight, thick lashes still glistening with tears, and her kiss came in a rush—clumsy and desperate, searching for comfort she couldn’t put into words. The scent of her filled the bathroom, sweet and dizzying. Lambert could hardly breathe, lost in it.
Her lips moved over his skin, soft one second, hungry the next, brushing from his nose down to his mouth. She made a small, broken sound against his mouth—half plea, half panic.
Then, just as suddenly, freezing water rained down on both of them from above.
The shock rattled him. If anyone needed cold water to wake up, it was Lambert just as much as Camilla. Every muscle in his body tensed. He almost wished he could jump into an icy lake just to cool off, anything to stop the fire burning through him. Because he wasn’t sure what he’d do next otherwise.
Camilla shivered, her skin hot and trembling under the cold spray. Instead of pulling back, she just held onto him tighter. She looked completely confused, overwhelmed by everything her body was feeling. When he didn’t respond, her confusion turned to panic, need making her voice shake as she pressed herself tighter against him.
“It hurts…” she whispered, the words barely there, and something about the way she said it went straight to Lambert’s core.
He drew in a shaky breath. Ice water or not, nothing was cooling him down. She was struggling, but he was, too. Hearing her soft cries ripped at him in a way he couldn’t fight.
His face was set, tightly controlled, but he couldn’t hold back anymore. He bent down fast, searching for her lips…
Lambert looked away at first, but then Camilla said his name, barely more than a breath. “Lambert…”
Something inside him snapped. All that restraint simply disappeared. Camilla caught his hand and pressed it against her, letting instinct take over. The feel of her skin under his palm nearly made him lose it.
His shirt was plastered to him, outlining every muscle. Camilla let out a soft, relieved sigh at his touch. When she opened her eyes, those big, teary eyes almost seemed to beg him, even if she couldn’t say the words out loud.
Lambert’s arm looped around her waist. He pulled her close, holding her tight, and her delicate body fit perfectly against his chest, as if she belonged there, trembling, wanting, safe.
