Camilla went quiet for a moment. "You know how sometimes, during a random warm spell in the winter, the flowers get tricked into blooming early?"

"Yeah," Catheleen nodded. "A false spring. What about it?"

"The flowers don't know it's a trick. They think the winter is over. Sometimes people are like those early-blooming flowers. Someone shows them a little warmth, and they think it's love, only to end up getting their hearts completely broken when the frost returns."

"But even in a late frost, the roots survive," Catheleen argued gently. "They might get a little frostbitten, but when real spring comes, they bloom again."

"Some flowers just freeze to death," Camilla smiled faintly, shaking her head. "Anyway, enough depressing talk. Tell me you ordered the beef meatballs."

"Obviously!" Catheleen spun her phone around to show the cart. "I got all our favorites!"

Camilla's eyes crinkled in a genuine smile. "Love you!"

Seeing that smile sent a sharp ache through Catheleen's heart.
