Once the hospital staff transferred Camilla into the VIP suite and went over the post-op care instructions, Lambert immediately ushered Catheleen out the door.
Catheleen made one final, desperate attempt to stay. "But it's going to be so inconvenient for you to look after her! You're a man, she's a woman..."
"What exactly did you see last night?" Lambert interrupted smoothly.
"I saw..."
Catheleen’s mind flashed back. She had seen Camilla straddling Lambert's lap. And they had absolutely been kissing. Given how intimate they clearly were, the argument about propriety flew right out the window.
Finally, the room was empty save for Lambert and Camilla. The only sound was the steady, rhythmic beeping of the medical monitors. Lambert sat at the edge of the bed, his gaze locked onto her face, entirely unwilling to blink.
Heaven knew his heart had practically stopped beating when Catheleen called in a panic. Seeing Camilla pale, drenched in cold sweat, and writhing in agony had taught Lambert the true meaning of terror. Now, watching her sleep peacefully, a profound ache radiated through his chest. Her naturally luminous complexion was utterly devoid of color. Whether it was just a trick of the light or not, her chin looked sharper. She seemed even more fragile.
The doctor had mentioned that everyone metabolized anesthesia differently, making her exact wake-up time unpredictable. Lambert gently brushed the back of her hand. It felt a little too cool. Frowning, he reached down to check her feet. The skin was like ice.
Unable to sit still, he immediately tracked down the on-call doctor, then ordered his men to go buy a hot water bottle. Returning to the room, he sat at the foot of the bed, carefully lifting her freezing feet and tucking them directly against his own stomach beneath his shirt.
The sudden contrast of her icy skin against his warm torso sent a jolt through him. She was freezing.
