She didn't know how long she had been asleep, but it felt like more than a couple of hours.
It was the middle of the night. Why hadn't Lambert gone to sleep yet?
He was still sitting up, keeping watch over her.
In that fragile moment, a sudden, desperate impulse seized Camilla.
She wanted to stop thinking. Stop worrying about the consequences.
Status, wealth, family background—none of it mattered.
To experience a romance with a man like him, even if it burned out quickly, would give her enough beautiful memories to last a lifetime.
Lambert flipped the page of the document he was reviewing and instinctively glanced over at her.
Their eyes met.
"You're awake?"
Lambert looked surprised. "Are you in pain?"
Camilla shook her head slightly.
Lambert smiled softly. "Why aren't you saying anything? Just secretly staring at me without blinking?"
For once, Camilla didn't fire back with a denial.
She simply lowered her gaze in silence as a faint blush crept onto her earlobes.
Lambert picked up a damp cotton swab and gently moistened her dry lips.
Once he finished, Camilla finally found her voice. "Why aren't you sleeping? It's so late."
It was already past two in the morning.
"Not tired," Lambert replied.
That was impossible. He wasn't made of iron.
"I'm fine." Camilla had actually woken up from the pain, but she refused to cause a scene in the dead of night. "Go get some sleep."
"Is my Cammie worried about me?"
Camilla looked away. "Can you... just talk normally?"
"How am I not talking normally?" A warm hum of amusement vibrated in his chest. "You caring about me makes me very happy."
