"Go to sleep. I'll watch over you," he murmured. "I'll rest when I'm tired, I promise."
The pain relief pump worked its magic quickly. As the discomfort faded, Camilla let her heavy eyelids fall and slipped back into a deep sleep.
By the time she opened her eyes again, morning light was spilling into the room.
Lambert was still sitting in the chair beside her bed. Looking at his flawless face, it was impossible to tell he had been awake all night.
"Did you sleep at all?" Camilla asked.
Not wanting her to worry, Lambert lied smoothly, "I got a solid two hours."
"You have to go into the office later, right? Let the caregiver take over. You need to go home and rest."
"Who said I'm going to the office?" Lambert countered. "You just had surgery. Why would I go to work? What job is more important than you?"
The romantic confession slipped out so naturally, it caught her completely off guard.
Camilla's heart did a wild flutter in her chest.
The urge to throw caution to the wind and just be with him grew stronger by the second.
But then reality crashed back down. She wasn't even divorced yet...
Remembering her catastrophic marriage and her cold, indifferent parents, a chill washed over her.
With Lambert's immense status, there was no way he should be entangled with a divorced woman.
People would rip him to shreds.
Even if they didn't dare say it to his face, the vicious gossip behind his back would be relentless.
"What are you thinking about?" Lambert's voice pulled her back. "Stop overthinking. Your only priority right now is recovering. Nothing else matters."
"I know," Camilla replied softly. "But you need to take care of yourself too. Let the caregiver stay with me. Go get some sleep."
Lambert considered it for a moment. "Alright. Call me if you need anything."
He summoned the caregiver, gave a few strict instructions, and finally stepped out.
