Just the thought of being with him and then losing him was already tearing her apart.
If she actually had to live through that kind of heartbreak, it would kill her.
Since she knew the ending would destroy her, the only logical choice was to completely sever the connection before it even began.
"Why?" Lambert stared down at her, his dark eyes narrowing in confusion. "Camilla, stop lying to me. Don't give me that garbage about already having someone you like, or that you don't feel anything for me... I don't buy it. I know you aren't the type of woman who just casually throws herself at a man, kissing and touching him..."
"Can you please stop bringing that up!" Camilla squeezed her eyes shut, her voice trembling. "Fine! Tell me how much I owe you, and I'll pay you back right now!"
She had backed herself flat against the bedroom door. Lambert didn't say a word. He simply took a slow step forward, trapping her against the solid wood.
Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She was too terrified to even open her eyes.
"What are you so afraid of?" Lambert looked down at her trembling frame. "Look at me. Answer the question."
"I don't have any obligation to answer you." Camilla kept her eyes glued to the floor. "We don't belong in the same world. Yes, I don't have anyone else I like, but I can promise you right now... I will never fall for you."
"You'll never fall for me?"
"Exactly. And I know you're going to say, if I don't like you, then why was I all over you? I told you, I was drunk. I have zero self-control around incredibly handsome men when I've been drinking."
"Then how exactly do you plan on paying me back?"
Camilla physically flinched.
Lambert let out a low, dangerous laugh. "My first time being held by a woman. My first time having a woman run her hands all over my chest and abs. My first kiss... Tell me, Camilla. How exactly do you compensate a man for that?"
Camilla's mouth went dry.
She desperately wanted to call his bluff, to scream that he was lying. But it was just words against words. She had absolutely no proof that he was a seasoned player. How could she fight that?
"How could you possibly afford it?" Lambert leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a dark, predatory octave. "What exactly are you going to use to pay me off?"
He was so close that his crisp, heavy musky scent completely enveloped her, hijacking the air in her lungs.
She didn't dare move. She barely dared to breathe, shrinking into herself in a desperate bid to disappear.
But Lambert clearly had zero intention of letting her off the hook.
"I have never taken a losing deal in my entire life," Lambert whispered. "How do you think I built my empire?"
Camilla was completely overwhelmed.
