As soon as Lambert walked out, Latonia grabbed her phone and called Camilla.
Thank God, she picked up.
“Camilla, listen, please,” Latonia said quickly. “Lambert says it was all a misunderstanding. Your husband was the one who sent you to Owen’s room, and Lambert got there after—”
Camilla cut her off right away. “So, what, he just did what Owen didn’t finish?”
Latonia fell silent. Even if Lambert hadn’t started this whole mess, there was no denying he’d touched Camilla. Whether or not he knew from the beginning, he was tangled up in it now.
“Camilla, I don’t know exactly what happened, but I really do trust Lambert,” Latonia said quietly. “Would you at least let him explain?”
“That’s just it, Latonia. I don’t need the trouble. You put faith in his character, but I trust what I saw with my own eyes.”
“Camilla…” Latonia felt tangled up herself, wanting to explain. “It’s not that I don’t believe you, I just—”
“I get where you’re coming from, Latonia. I do. You’re professional, and I know you stand up for what’s right, not just for your friends. But let’s just leave this here, okay?”
Latonia hesitated, her chest aching. “So what are you going to do?”
Camilla let out a bitter little laugh. “Honestly? Maybe I just accept it. Please, can you tell Lambert not to look for me? I never want to see him again. Not for the rest of my life.”
When the call ended, Latonia felt that sting deep in her chest.
She’d only seen Camilla a couple of times, but always liked her. And with Catheleen in the mix, it felt impossible to just wash her hands of this.
Now, though, everything was a mess. She didn’t have a clue what to do anymore.
She dialed Lambert.
He answered right away.
“Don’t look for her,” Latonia said. “She doesn’t want to see you. She said it’s over.”
Lambert was silent.
Latonia pushed on, her voice softer. “She’s really traumatized. Just hearing your name made her shake all over.”
No reply. Then the line went dead.
Camilla sprang up, too rushed to even find her slippers, and padded to the door.
“Catheleen!”
She flung the door open, only to freeze.
A tall man stood in the hallway.
It was Lambert.
She stood there, stunned, barefoot in her pajamas, feeling completely exposed.
He just frowned, looking her up and down, like he was annoyed she’d opened the door without checking.
For a moment, Camilla couldn’t move. If it was Catheleen, she would have texted first. Besides, Catheleen knew the code—why would she knock?
Lambert was the last person she wanted to see. She hated him. The sight of his perfect pretty face made her sick.
Without a word, Camilla reached for the door and started to shut it.
