Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 63

The second the door swung open, his gaze locked right on Camilla.

Latonia could tell something was up. She’d seen this kind of thing before and knew immediately. With Lambert’s intense stare, there was no way Camilla could miss it, either. She felt the weight of it the moment he walked in. Only Catheleen seemed completely oblivious. She was sweet but painfully naive, always kind of starstruck by Lambert. She liked him, no question, but there was real fear mixed in with her admiration, too.

Latonia, ever the big sister of the group, took charge. “You’re not interrupting at all, come on in. I’ll have them bring a few more things for the table.”

Lambert strolled over and took a seat, slipping out of his suit jacket and undoing his sleeves with easy, practiced movements. His fingers were long and confident, everything about him cool and composed.

Camilla tore her gaze away, suddenly hyper-aware of herself. She hid behind her teacup, sipping just to have something to do with her hands.

Since the whole thing was supposed to be about business, Latonia brought up some work topic, steering the conversation in that direction so things wouldn’t get weird too quickly. On the other side of the table, Catheleen leaned over to Camilla, her voice low and full of excitement about her recent trip. She wanted Camilla to feel comfortable and distracted, chattering away with stories and gossip.

A server set Camilla’s favorite dish in front of her. Catheleen immediately handed her a serving. “Eat up, Cammie! Isn’t this the one you always order?”

Camilla smiled, but her eyes drifted over to Lambert without thinking. He was watching her. Their eyes met for a split second, and her heart skipped. She looked away fast, feeling a jolt go through her whole body.

Unbothered, Lambert just picked up his tea and took a casual sip, as if nothing had happened. His fingers lingered on the edge of the platter for a moment before letting go.

After a few more minutes, Latonia’s phone buzzed. She excused herself to take the call outside—it was work-related. When she finished, there was a message from Lambert waiting.

Can you get Catheleen out for a minute?

Unable to deal with the intensity any longer, Camilla finally looked up and met his eyes. His stare was calm, almost unreadable, deep and endless, like some vast stretch of dark water.

“Mr. White…” Her voice came out quieter than she meant. She tried to steady herself. “I think I owe you a thank you.”

He looked at her, his expression unreadable. “For what?”

Camilla hesitated, trying to find the right words. “For what happened on the yacht... If you hadn’t stepped in, I don’t know what might have happened. So, thank you.”

Lambert’s eyes didn’t leave her. “You were on my yacht,” he said quietly. “Your safety mattered to me. I don’t let anyone get hurt when they’re with me.”
