“Would you have helped someone else, too?”
“I would have.”
Camilla let out a breath she’d been holding. She didn’t really know why, but she didn’t want there to be anything special between her and Lambert. It was better if he saw her as just another face in the crowd. Men like Lambert, people at the very top, were never supposed to have any overlap with people like her.
“You don’t have to be on edge around me,” Lambert said. “I’m not here to make you uncomfortable.”
Camilla took a sip of tea, buying herself a second. “I’m not nervous,” she protested.
“Then why can’t you even look at me?”
Her heart stumbled. Out of reflex, she forced herself to meet his eyes.
Lambert had striking eyes. Sharp, focused, commanding. Having all that focus on her—that kind of attention—felt oddly satisfying, forcing her to sit up a little straighter without realizing it.
But at the same time, there was something distant about him. His gaze was deep, almost cold, impossible to read.
“I just…” Camilla tucked her hair behind her ear. “We don’t really know each other.”
“That’ll change,” Lambert said. “You’re friends with Catheleen. If you ever need anything, you can come straight to me.”
“Oh, that’s alright,” Camilla said in a hurry. “I already owe you for everything you’ve done.”
“If you insist on thanking me,” Lambert said, “let me ask for something.”
She glanced up, startled, almost certain she’d misheard.
“Were you just going to say thanks and move on?”
Her cheeks warmed. Lambert actually wanted her to show her gratitude? Just saying thank you suddenly felt way too casual, but honestly, what could she even offer someone at his level?
“I’m not sure,” she admitted. “What would you like as a thank you, Mr. White? I’ll do what I can.”
She scrambled to recover. “What kind of style do you like? Do you want a shirt? A suit? Maybe a coat?”
Lambert handed her his phone. “We can talk details later. For now, let’s exchange contact info so it’s easier to communicate.”
For a second, Camilla wondered if she was dreaming. Was Lambert really about to add her contact details?
She still felt awkward being alone with him. Her mind drifted, unhelpfully, to that kiss. It had been her first, and she’d handed it over without thinking. He’d been so controlled about it all, and she didn’t know what that said about him—or about her.
“Is it not convenient for you?” Lambert’s voice dragged her back.
Camilla snapped out of it. What was she thinking? Who he’d kissed, who he’d been with—none of that mattered to her.
“Yes, it’s fine,” she said quickly.
If someone had told her she’d add Lambert’s contact info one day, she never would have believed it. His profile picture was simple—a snowy mountain peak under a crystal clear blue sky. His name was even simpler, just ‘Lambert.’
