Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 69

The house was pretty well insulated, but some of the windows were left open. What if someone actually heard her scream?

Daniel had barely started to worry when a sudden pounding broke through his thoughts. Not knocking, but desperate, angry fists slamming against the door.

He froze for just a second. Camilla didn’t waste the moment. She shoved him hard, sending him tumbling right off the sofa. She couldn’t hold it in anymore; she pressed her hand tight over her mouth and rushed for the door.

With her clothes in disarray and her hair a mess, if she made it outside, the situation would be impossible for Daniel to explain. He scrambled up and tried to stop her. Pain shot through him as his knee crashed into the coffee table, and he yelped, grabbing at his leg.

By then, Camilla had already made it to the hallway. She flung the door open. Outside, two huge men in black suits stood waiting. One of them glanced down at her and spoke. “We heard someone yelling for help. Do you need us to call the police?”

“Yes!” Camilla was shaking so badly her teeth almost chattered. She clutched the torn edge of her top, voice barely steady. “Please, call the police... right now!”

“Stop!” Daniel limped after her, still breathless and wild-eyed. His face twisted in anger when he recognized the men. “You two again? Are you ever going to mind your own business?”

The men didn’t react to him at all. They turned to Camilla. “Are you certain? Should we call?”

“Yes!” Camilla’s voice trembled, but her answer was clear.

Daniel, suddenly panicking, tried to argue. “Don’t call the cops! We’re married, this is our private business, stay out of it! Why call the police, it’s just family stuff. They won’t care about a husband and wife fighting!”

The men kept ignoring him. One pulled out his phone and started dialing. Daniel made a desperate grab, but the other man pushed him aside with barely any effort. Daniel knew he was outmatched, so he whirled back to Camilla. “What’s wrong with you? Why get the police involved? Tell him to stop, right now!”

Camilla said nothing. She pressed herself behind the men in the doorway. The call had already connected. The address was quickly given and then the phone snapped shut.

Camilla didn’t bother to answer. Before she’d even gotten into the police car, she’d thrown up from the stress.

At the station, they were put in separate rooms for questioning. Camilla told the officers everything, leaving nothing out. Daniel, on the other hand, insisted none of it was forced, that it was all just a normal part of married life.

While Camilla spoke, the female officer handling her case was gentle, talking her through what would happen next. If Camilla chose to press charges, she’d need to get a medical exam to document her injuries.

Afterward, as Camilla was walked down the hallway, she heard raised voices ahead. She lifted her head and saw her parents, Lean and Adah.

“Dad? Mom? What are you doing here?”

Camilla’s face was white as paper, her lips drained of color. She looked lost, barely holding herself together, but her parents didn’t seem to notice. Adah cut straight to the point. “What happened? How did an argument between husband and wife get you both dragged down to the police station?”
