“Dad, if I get divorced, it could hurt the company,” Daniel said, his voice tight with worry.

“Oh, now you’re worried about the company? Where was all this concern back when you were obsessed with your little romance? When I asked you to agree to the marriage arrangement, did you care about the company then?” Jackson shot back.

Daniel stared at the floor, too ashamed to answer.

Jackson looked at his son, frustrated, but he knew he would have to fix the mess himself. He pinched the bridge of his nose, then said, “Aren’t you scared Camilla might make this even bigger? If she blows this up, the company’s reputation is toast, and it’ll only get worse from there. Stop dragging this out. Sign the divorce and do it now.

“But she’s suing me,” Daniel said in a small voice.

Jackson sighed. “What else can we do? Looks like I’ll have to swallow my pride and go beg her.”

“I’m sorry, Dad.”

Jackson’s tone turned cold. “From now on, I only have one rule for you.”

Daniel looked up. “What is it?”

“Don’t ever talk to Barbara again.”

“Dad—”

“If you don’t listen to me, don’t call me Dad anymore. I mean it. I won’t have a son who can’t follow this one simple rule.”

Later, Camilla’s phone rang. It was Jackson.

“Camilla, I’m calling to apologize for everything my son did. I’m not asking for forgiveness. If you want a divorce, I’ll make sure it happens. Whatever you need, just say it.”

For the first time in days, Camilla felt her lungs unlock—someone was finally speaking like an adult.

She said, “I don’t want anything. I don’t need a penny from your family. I just want this divorce.”

“You’ll get what you deserve, no less,” Jackson replied. “But Camilla, as a favor to me, please let the police matter go. I promise Daniel won’t bother you again. Take what you’re owed and go live a good life.”

“Those are just the rules,” Latonia said, shrugging. “But at least once you’ve signed, it’s basically a done deal. Nothing should go wrong now.”

Camilla nodded. Waiting an extra month wasn’t ideal, but if it meant she could finally walk away, she could handle it.

Latonia leaned in. “I’ll help you read over the agreement. Make sure you’re not cheated out of a single thing that’s yours.”

“I don’t want his money,” Camilla said.

Catheleen gawked at her. “Are you kidding? After everything you’ve been through, you should take it. Think of it as payment for your suffering!”

Camilla shook her head. “I don’t want their money. I can earn my own. Even if it’s not a lot, at least I’ll feel comfortable spending it.”

“If that’s what you want, I’ll back you all the way,” Latonia said.

The three of them relaxed, chatting quietly. After a while, Latonia slipped out of the room and pulled out her phone.

She called Lambert. “Good news. Camilla’s filing for divorce this afternoon. Daniel agreed to everything.”
