“No, you can’t get divorced!”
Daniel’s heart squeezed when he heard the panic in Barbara’s voice. He tried to sound calm, but his words came out shaky. “Barbie, it’s not like I want to split up either. But my dad keeps pressuring me, and your parents… they know about what happened on the yacht. I don’t even know how to begin explaining.”
Barbara paused, thinking. “What happened on the yacht wasn’t your fault. I’ll talk to my parents. They’ll understand. As for your dad, just refuse to agree. What’s he going to do about it?”
Daniel sighed. “You don’t know how intense my dad is. He hit me in the head, split it open. If I don’t agree to the divorce, he might really hurt me.”
Barbara bit her tongue, silently cursing him. Grown man, and he still can’t stand up for himself. No backbone at all, always letting other people decide for him. Whatever. Maybe a guy like him is exactly who Camilla deserves. Those two definitely shouldn’t get divorced.
She sounded concerned, though. “He hit you? Where exactly? Are you okay? I can’t believe he’d actually hit you!”
Daniel perked up a little, comforted by her concern. “Barbie, you’re the only one who cares. My dad went too far. He used an ashtray, left a big cut, and there was so much blood…”
Barbara gave a few half-hearted words of comfort and tried to bring him back to reality. “Look, the most important thing now is keeping Camilla from making things worse.”
He sounded desperate. “But your idea didn’t work. She even went to the police. What am I supposed to do?”
“Don’t freak out. Let me think,” Barbara said. “Here’s what I’ll do, I’ll call my parents and see where things stand. I’ll get back to you later.”
Daniel still didn’t want to drop it. “Barbie, my dad said not to worry about the company and told me I could just get divorced. Isn’t now the perfect time? Why are you so against it?”
“Because a divorce won’t just hurt the company. It’ll stick to you personally. Think about it, people are going to wonder why you two broke up. If word gets out about what really happened on the yacht, or if people find out you forced her, how are you supposed to keep doing business?”
Daniel started to panic. “So what am I supposed to do? If I don’t divorce her, she threatened to tell everyone!”
She replied: We were classmates, so I can’t just reject him outright, but he’s being way too persistent. What should I do?
Lambert messaged back: Barbie, I was planning to come see you in a few days, so we could meet. But work has been insane, I can’t get away at the moment.
Barbara’s heart fluttered. He wanted to see her? That had to mean he was interested, that he cared enough to want to make a move.
She replied quickly: You’re coming over? Is it for work stuff?
She tried to keep her excitement in check, playing it cool.
Lambert wrote back: No, just to see you.
