Barbara tried to sound surprised. “You’re coming to see me? Really? Why? We’ve been talking for ages and we don’t even know what each other looks like. Aren’t you worried I might actually be ugly?”
He messaged back, “Looks aren’t a big deal. To me, character and personality mean way more. Barbie, you’re amazing. That’s why so many people like you.”
Barbara’s hands were literally shaking with excitement.
She typed slowly, “So you’re coming just to meet me?”
He said, “There’s something I want to tell you face to face.”
Trying to play it cool, Barbara replied, “What is it? Can’t you just tell me on the phone?”
He answered, “I want it to feel special, more official. Barbie, can you wait for me?”
She didn’t hesitate. “Of course, I can wait.”
He sent another message. “What I mean is, please don’t say yes to the guy who’s chasing you. Let’s talk about everything after we meet, okay?”
Barbara could pretty much tell he was about to confess. The fact that he would actually put off important things at work and fly all the way out here just to tell her in person… that felt unbelievably precious to her.
Lambert wasn’t just anyone. He was the type who could make millions in minutes. And here he was, willing to drop everything and fly across the world just for her.
Still acting clueless, Barbara replied, “But what does me turning him down have to do with us meeting?”
She’d always played up her innocent side around men. Sometimes she’d drop a flirty line, then act like she had no idea what she was doing. It made their hearts race and kept them guessing, totally caught up in the game. Honestly, that move worked every single time.
He answered almost right away. “Barbie, I’m really busy, so I probably won’t have much time to talk these next couple of days. But promise me you won’t accept that guy’s confession.”
Barbara let it go and switched topics. “So when are you coming? Can I pick you up?”
And really, divorce would be such a bad look. Who knew how much people would gossip once they found out?
They honestly couldn’t handle it.
“So what are we supposed to do?” Adah asked. “Who would have guessed Daniel would be so clueless and do something like that?”
Lean shook his head. “Exactly. I mean, sure, he was scared of Owen. But couldn’t he have been more careful? How could he let Camilla find out?”
Adah added, “When has she even done anything big for that company? There’s no way they’d risk everything just to make her happy and go against the Gates family. So what if she slept with someone else? It’s not like Daniel even cares.”
Lean sighed. “Sure, a woman’s reputation is important, but you have to think about what matters more. What Daniel did wasn’t great, but at the time he didn’t really have a choice.”
As they were deep in discussion, Barbara’s call suddenly came through.
