Latonia squinted, not bothering to hide her annoyance. “Is that Daniel? Seriously, what’s up with him? Why dress up like he’s going to a party just to get divorced? And why the flowers?”
Camilla shrugged, just as confused. “No idea.”
Still, a knot of dread tightened in her stomach.
Latonia parked the car and turned to her, trying to reassure her friend. “Don’t worry. I’ll go with you. We’ve made it this far. There’s no way he’s backing out now.”
They got out of the car together. Daniel spotted Camilla the moment she stepped onto the sidewalk.
Latonia was gorgeous, with this sharp confidence that made weak men back off right away. But Camilla’s beauty was a whole other thing. She had on a simple puffer jacket, her hair loose and unstyled, but her pale skin and delicate features gave her an easy, effortless charm.
Daniel watched her, thinking to himself that maybe, if Camilla was willing to give a little, a lifetime with her wouldn’t be so bad after all.
He walked over quickly, his eyes locked on Camilla.
Latonia moved before Camilla could, stepping in front of her protectively. “Mr. White, you seem awfully chipper for someone getting a divorce. Are we celebrating now, with roses and all?”
Daniel hurried to explain. “It’s not a celebration. The flowers are for Camilla. I… I wanted to apologize.”
Latonia shot him a cold look. “You ought to apologize for everything you’ve done. But you can keep the flowers. I don’t think Camilla will be taking them.”
Daniel frowned. “Can I talk to her? Just for a minute?”
Normally, he would’ve lost his temper by now, but today he was here to make amends.
Latonia was about to say something, but Camilla touched her arm gently. “It’s fine,” she said quietly. “Let’s just get this over with. We’re here for the paperwork. Let’s go inside.”
Daniel looked desperate. “Everyone messes up sometimes. Don’t treat me like a criminal for one mistake!”
Camilla’s laugh was cold. “One mistake? What you did… it’s not just a mistake. What you did killed something inside me, Daniel. Honestly, you’re lucky you’re only facing divorce.”
“Even people on death row get second chances,” Daniel pleaded. His voice cracked. “Let my dad keep tabs on me. If you don’t trust me, trust him. I promise I’ll never hurt you again, not ever.”
Camilla’s voice was steady now, sharp and final. “I told you. It’s not going to happen. If you really respect me, you’ll sign those papers and let me go. I used to love you. That’s done. Now, every time I see you, I want to throw up. I will never forgive you, Daniel. Not in this lifetime.”
Daniel clung to a last hope. “I get that you’re angry. I get that you hate me… but that just proves you still care. You can’t hate without loving first. Just let me show you I’m serious. Give me time. Please, Camilla.”
Latonia rolled her eyes hard. “Wow, you really do think the world revolves around you, huh? She cares about you? She feels sick looking at you. Sick, Daniel. Do you even understand what that means?”
