Camilla couldn’t believe how out of hand things had gotten.
When she first joined the dinner, everything seemed fine. The conversation flowed easily, everyone was laughing, and she even started to relax a little. Things only got weird when someone decided Catheleen should make a toast. It was the same old excuse… Catheleen had crushed her sales numbers, so now they wanted her to “celebrate” by drinking even more.
Catheleen could barely sit up straight, and Camilla made up her mind right then. No way was she letting Catheleen drink another drop. At this point, she didn’t care if she upset Catheleen’s coworkers or not. She leaned toward a guy everyone called Oakley, told him they were leaving, and helped Catheleen to her feet.
But Oakley glanced at another man in the group. The guy stepped in front of them, blocking their way. He started talking, but he was way too close for comfort, reaching out and trying to “guide” Camilla by the arm. His hand lingered way too long.
Catheleen, even drunk, was still alert enough to notice. She didn’t even hesitate. She slapped his hand away and caught him on the cheek.
Of course, she wasn’t strong, and the slap didn’t hurt much. But in front of a whole table of people, it was a huge embarrassment. The man’s face darkened, and he swung his hand back, ready to hit her.
Camilla, still holding onto Catheleen, didn’t even think about it. She stepped in and put herself right between them.
But the blow never landed. Silence spread across the room. Camilla opened her eyes and saw nothing but black fabric in front of her face. Then the faint, cold scent of expensive cologne hit her. She realized a man was standing only inches away. Instinctively, she took a couple steps back, trying to tamp down her racing nerves.
Then she noticed him—Lambert. Somehow he was there, his arm stretched out to grab the man’s wrist before it made contact. Up close, it was obvious the man was no match for Lambert’s height or strength.
A few other coworkers who looked like they wanted to help froze as soon as they actually saw Lambert, or maybe it was just the way he looked—collected, perfectly dressed, and radiating this quiet, intimidating power.
Lambert let go of the man’s wrist, pushed him back, and the guy nearly toppled over before a friend grabbed him and kept him upright. A bodyguard immediately walked over, offering Lambert a packet of disinfecting wipes. He took one, looked down, and wiped his fingers with slow, deliberate precision.
“What happened here?” His voice was deep, calm, and carried a confidence that made everyone else shrink away.
If Lambert hadn’t shown up exactly when he did, Camilla would’ve been the one getting slapped. Catheleen wasn’t making it easy either, shifting her weight and making it impossible for Camilla to hang on much longer.
Lambert stepped in, his hand appearing out of nowhere as he gripped Catheleen’s arm. “Stand up straight.”
His tone was gentle but firm, that familiar hint of authority sinking right into Catheleen’s bones. She blinked up at him, trying to focus. “Lambert?”
“Can you walk?” Lambert’s eyes stayed on her.
She nodded eagerly. “I can…” Before she could finish, her knees buckled and she started tipping over.
Seeing Lambert catch hold of her, Camilla let go, ready to help if her cousin slipped again. She hovered close, making sure Catheleen stayed upright.
