Lambert reached out at the exact same moment.
Before either of them could help Catheleen, Camilla’s hand landed right on the back of Lambert’s. She’d put some force into her movement to steady Catheleen, and the momentum sent her palm pressing firmly against him instead of just grazing.
The moment she realized what had happened, Camilla could hardly control the reaction that shot through her body. A wave of disgust, fear, and something almost like revulsion made her snatch her hand back. She stumbled two steps away, her face turning even whiter.
Lambert’s jaw tightened as he watched her recoil. He put an arm around Catheleen’s shoulders, steadying her.
“I’ll drive you both home,” he said, his voice flat.
He started leading Catheleen toward the car, Camilla trailing a couple of steps behind. None of their coworkers dared to speak or even move.
Lambert helped Catheleen climb into the back seat, then looked at Camilla. “Get in.”
Camilla hesitated, glancing at Catheleen, worry furrowing her brow. She really didn’t want to get in Lambert’s car. Before she could say anything, Lambert spoke again. “I need you to look after her on the way.”
With that, Camilla had no room to argue. She slid into the car. The driver looked back at Lambert for a cue, then rushed around to open the front passenger door. The bodyguards piled into another car behind them.
On the road, things were tense but manageable. Even though Lambert’s presence made every breath feel a little tight, he was sitting up front, so Camilla could more or less handle it.
For the first part of the drive, Catheleen was pretty quiet. She snuggled against Camilla and made a few sleepy noises, but didn’t act out.
That changed about halfway home. Out of nowhere, Catheleen’s hand dove under the hem of Camilla’s shirt, wandering upward. Camilla’s heart nearly stopped as she grabbed Catheleen’s hand and whispered, urgent and gentle, “Catheleen, stop moving around.”
Catheleen, half-awake and tipsy, just pouted, pressing closer like it was nothing new. “No… Let me touch…”
She tried again, softer this time. “Catheleen, please settle down. Let’s just go home, okay?”
“Touch at home? But I wanna touch now, right now…” Catheleen wasn’t letting this go. Camilla pulled her hand out from under her shirt, but that only made Catheleen try a different tactic, sneaking her hand down Camilla’s collar instead.
Clearly, she wasn’t giving up until she got her way.
“Catheleen!” Lambert snapped again from up front.
Catheleen’s bottom lip trembled. “Why are you being so mean… You don’t even know, Cammie is so soft, I just love her… why can’t I…” Her voice cracked, wobbling on the edge of tears.
Lambert’s face was thundercloud dark.
