Lambert wanted nothing to do with the conversation. Just thinking about it made his head throb.
“You can ask her yourself,” he said. “Just make sure you handle it properly.”
He ended the call right after.
He might have delegated the whole mess, but now Latonia was left feeling restless and unsettled.
Catheleen’s orientation wasn’t what people expected? And Lambert had seen something? Latonia found herself spiraling. She couldn’t sit around and wait, so she grabbed her keys and headed for the door.
Before starting her car, she fired off a message to Catheleen. No reply. It was already after ten. Sleeping already? No way. Catheleen was a total night owl. Maybe she was in the shower or away from her phone.
Latonia didn’t bother waiting around for an answer. She got behind the wheel and drove over.
Standing at the front door, she tried to piece together how on earth she’d even start this conversation. To her surprise, Camilla opened up.
“Cammie, are you feeling any better?” Latonia walked right in, slipping into house shoes like it was her second home.
Camilla looked puzzled. “A bit, thanks. But Latonia, what brings you over so late?”
“I need to talk to Catheleen. Is she upstairs?” Latonia peered toward the staircase.
“She went straight to bed,” Camilla said. “She had some drinks and crashed when she got back.”
“She was drinking? With who?”
“Her coworkers.”
Latonia let out a sigh. There went the chance for a real conversation. But turning on her heel and leaving would be awkward too. “Daniel isn’t bothering you again, is he?”
“He messaged me, but I didn’t answer.”
They settled side by side on the couch.
“Just ignore him,” Latonia said. “You should contact his dad tomorrow. It’s probably the only way he’ll back off.”
“That was my plan.”
Latonia was quiet for a second, then asked, “Cammie, you and Catheleen have been close for so long. Sometimes she shares things with you she wouldn’t with me. Has she ever mentioned anything about, you know, dating someone?”
It was a scent that was all his, something nobody else in her life had ever left behind.
She and Catheleen both slept pretty still. The big, king-sized bed always felt roomy, leaving plenty of space between them.
Usually, it made for a comfortable night, but Camilla knew she didn’t have many nights left in this bed. She needed to get serious about finding a new place now. Lambert had been clear about that.
With her head so full of worries, sleep just wouldn’t come. She drifted in and out, catching barely three or four hours before the sky started to lighten.
Her phone had blown up with messages from Daniel, all apologies and empty promises. She ignored them. She didn’t answer Barbara’s messages either, even though she was pleading for Daniel, telling her to give him one more chance.
Camilla’s answer was short and final: I’m definitely getting a divorce.
She did yoga for forty minutes, then went out for breakfast. When she got back, Catheleen was already up and on the phone.
Camilla brought the breakfast out to the table.
Catheleen came down the stairs yawning, rubbing sleep out of her eyes. “Cammie, you’re up super early today.”
