Chapter 278 Crossing Paths Again
Chapter 278 Crossing Paths Again
From now on, Ayla and Kaleb could go visit Lillian together.
Ayla arrived early. Kaleb would be there in a few minutes, so she waited for him in the courtyard.
“Ayla…”
Ayla heard the voice and looked over.
She recognized Renee, one of Bria’s friends.
They weren’t close, and there was no need to be. Ayla kept a blank expression and didn’t speak.
Renee looked indifferent by Ayla’s presence. Still, after seeing Ayla a few times before, she’d been left with a strong impression. And the Ayla she saw in person was completely different from the Ayla Bria described. That made her curious.
“Ayla … why are you here? Are you visiting family?”
Renee was surprisingly friendly.
Ayla asked, “Do you need something?”
Renee hesitated. “Not really. I just wanted to say hi.”
Ayla fell silent again.
Renee really wanted to chat, so she brought up her grandfather. He’d had a stroke and was now in a vegetative state. She came by occasionally to see him.
Then Renee casually mentioned her major, trying to test whether Ayla knew anything about hacking. Her instincts told her Ayla did. But from start to finish, Ayla didn’t say a word.
So Renee ended up chattering nonstop all by herself.
Ayla was speechless. She finally cut her off. “If Bria knew you were being this friendly to me, do you think she’d still be your friend?”
Renee was mortified. “She’s coming to meet me later. We’re keeping it quiet. It’s fine.”
“You should go. There’s nothing for us to talk about.”
Kaleb was about to arrive. Ayla really didn’t have time for this.
Renee thought Ayla was cold.
But maybe she really was a glutton for punishment. The more Ayla ignored her, the more she wanted to get closer.
Before Bria showed up, Renee blurted out, “I really admire you, Ayla. Can I get your number or

something?”
Ayla was stunned.
Renee’s enthusiasm is a little scary.
Have we even interacted before?
Why is she telling me she admires me?
“What do you admire about me?” Ayla finally got curious.

“It’s a feeling. I can’t explain it! I like your vibe, and your looks too. I just really like you. Please, let’s exchange numbers!”
Renee fumbled for her phone, looking like she was begging.
Ayla didn’t move.
“Please, please!”
Ayla was soft-hearted. She didn’t want to reject her outright and hurt her feelings, so she explained, “No, thanks. I don’t want any contact with Bria, including her friends.”
Renee looked disappointed but still didn’t want to give up. “I swear I won’t bother you! If you don’t like me, you can block me anytime.
“I promise! I swear!”
She was way too clingy.
In the end, Ayla gave Renee her number, thinking she could always block her later.
Renee was visibly thrilled. “Thank you!”
“What are you doing here?” Kaleb’s voice came from behind.
Ayla looked over. Kaleb glanced at Renee a couple of times.
Who is this girl, acting so close to Ayla?
She’s annoying as hell.
Kaleb wasn’t interested. He pulled his gaze back and walked up to Ayla. The first thing out of his mouth wasn’t pleasant. “How come I never saw you this good at making friends before? Are you just giving anyone your number now?”
She’d better not be adopting “brothers” behind my back.
If I find out, I’ll never let it go.

Ayla knew Kaleb’s personality and didn’t bother arguing. “Let’s go.”
She stood up and walked off. Kaleb looked unhappy.
But he still followed obediently.

He even took the initiative to grab the things Ayla had bought for Lillian, quietly acting as the bag carrier.
The two of them had just left when Bria arrived.
Her expression was awful. “Renee, what were you doing? You were in there forever!” She hated waiting.
Renee had been watching Ayla. When she heard the voice, she immediately looked away.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
