Speaking of last time only made Bria’s expression darken further. She already had a bad temper and never tolerated losses. Renee’s words only fueled her anger. “That was because I didn’t understand her back then, so I swallowed it in silence!” Bria snapped. “If you gave me another chance, do you really think I’d let her bully me like that again?” She let out a cold snort. “Don’t boost someone else’s confidence just to crush your own!”
Anyone out there who dared bully her would eventually end up humiliated and apologizing before her.
Back at Frenchante Fashion Week, a minor celebrity had ticked her off. In the end, that person apologized on her knees anyway.
Ayla was the first person ever to make Bria suffer such a big loss.
“And didn’t you see there was a man standing next to her?”
Bria knew Ayla had divorced Troy. But seeing Ayla standing beside another man still made her uncomfortable, for reasons she couldn’t quite explain.
It was strange. Bria had always felt Ayla wasn’t worthy of Troy at all. The divorce should’ve been a good thing.
Maybe it was just that Ayla had barely divorced and was already hanging around another man. It was was too fast. Bria wasn’t mentally prepared for it, so she felt upset.
It was unreasonable, sure. But she felt uncomfortable. And once she felt uncomfortable, she needed answers. She had to go take a look herself. Otherwise, her curiosity wouldn’t be satisfied, and she wouldn’t sleep all night.
And while she was at it, she could complete the task Troy had given her.
Renee knew Bria always acted on impulse. There was no point trying to persuade her anymore.
Ayla kept her routine of visiting the care center once a month. The last time she came, she hadn’t received the divorce certificate yet and hadn’t fully let go. Now the divorce was finalized, and she’d truly moved on. Naturally, her mood was different.
As long as you give yourself time, no matter how hard something is, it eventually feels manageable.
Since Kaleb was there too, they could stay a little longer today.
Lillian and her husband, Vincent Walker, had been intellectuals of their generation, cultured people who’d also endured hardships during difficult times.
According to Juliana, Vincent had been a strict father, and Lillian a strict mother. If a child acted up, they’d deliver a double whammy without hesitation.
But they were very good to their grandchildren, so the bonds were strong. Vincent had passed away, and

Lillian now had dementia. Ayla and Kaleb visited often.

Still, Ayla knew that as grandchildren, they could never matter more than biological children. Now, Juliet was Lillian’s only child left.
Blood ties ran deep. Kaleb could act on impulse, but Ayla took this into account, so she wouldn’t completely cut Juliet off. After all, when it came to Lillian’s care, Juliet was the one running around and holding everything together.
Going forward, though, she wouldn’t place expectations on Juliet. She’d maintain clear boundaries.
Lillian wasn’t asleep today.
The moment Ayla walked in, she saw Lillian knitting. Her movements and posture were proper, looking just like her usual self. But the stitches were all wrong.
The yarn balls had been brought earlier by Juliet. Lillian’s white hair was neatly combed, her clothes tidy. The caregivers had been carefully vetted by Juliet, so Lillian was well taken care of.
“Grandma, I’m here to see you,” Ayla called out.
Lillian didn’t lift her head.
Ayla looked at Kaleb. “You try.”
Kaleb shot Ayla a look. He then set his things down, squatted in front of Lillian, and started calling out in a sing-song voice, “Grandma, Grandma, Grandma…”
Lillian finally reacted. She saw Kaleb, frowned, turned her head away, and looked completely annoyed.
Kaleb was puzzled.
Ayla laughed so hard her shoulders shook. She squatted down as well. “Grandma…”
When Lillian saw Ayla, she smiled right away, but she got the name wrong. “Juliana…”
Ayla wasn’t surprised. Lillian had mistaken her before.
“When did you move back to Trensea?” Lillian started chatting. “Now that you’re back, don’t move away again. If you marry that far away and something happens, I won’t be able to take care of you.”
After saying that, Lillian didn’t continue.
She was always like this. She’d say a few sentences, then forget, then remember again and go back to knitting.
But Ayla and Kaleb’s expressions weren’t great.
Back then, Juliana and her husband had moved to Zheron for work, leaving Ayla and Kaleb in Trensea.
And later, something happened.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
