“Kaleb can’t accept it.” Draven spoke first.

“Whether he can or not, he’ll have to.” Ayla had been able to use Draven to shut Bria down so easily earlier precisely because of their partnership. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so at ease about it.
Just like with Rolf. She’d had no pressure at all asking Draven for help.
Ayla’s decisiveness surprised Draven.
He’d thought she would care more about Kaleb’s feelings.
“Your grandfather’s birthday is coming up. Your mother’s visiting too. If you don’t move in, it’ll give us away.”
Ayla said, “Of course. We’re neighbors anyway. You’ll still sleep at your place at night. Once your mother arrives, you can stay here instead. But my room needs some of your things. It can’t look like there are no signs of a couple living together at all.”
Draven’s intentions toward Ayla weren’t exactly pure.
But when she said this, her gaze was steady enough to pass a vetting committee. There was not a hint of emotion.
Draven replied hesitantly, “Okay.”
Seeing that Draven didn’t continue, Ayla thought Kaleb had upset him. She took the initiative. “Mr. Storm, you’ve never dated before. You don’t have experience. But I do. Once Kaleb leaves later, we’ll set things up together.”
Draven was stunned.
A week ago, they’d hugged and held hands.
But Ayla acted as if nothing had ever happened.
Draven began to wonder if he’d been overthinking things.
He lifted his eyes and looked out at the Trensea skyline. The view was beautiful. He casually tested the waters. “Kaleb is guarding against me so hard. I’m worried you’ll be influenced by him and start guarding against me too. After all, two single adults living together can look awkward.”
A flicker of embarrassment crossed Ayla’s face. Earlier, Troy’s constant interference in her life had sent her spiraling into overthinking. After not seeing him for a week, she’d finally come back to herself.
“Mr. Storm, you’ve been single all this time and never managed to get into a relationship. What would I ever have to worry about with you?”
Ayla knew Draven was someone who took things seriously. They happened to share a common enemy and common topics. By chance, they interacted more and more and had become friends.

Draven treated his friends well. His kindness toward her was the same as how he treated James.

If anything, Ayla was the one worrying. After two years, she might develop feelings over time, then suffer when they split.
But that didn’t really apply to Draven.
If you don’t date for ages, the older you get, the harder it is to step into love.
And Draven’s personality wasn’t going to change. That made it even harder.
Ayla could understand why Draven’s mother was pushing him to marry.
“I trust your character, Mr. Storm. Otherwise, I really would’ve misjudged you.”
Everything that had happened during this time, Ayla had seen it all and taken it to heart. She could feel it in her heart.
After a pause, he promised, “Don’t worry.”
“I know. I never worry when it comes to you.”
He was like a mountain, firm and stable. Nothing was more reassuring than that.
Kaleb had been lying on the couch, secretly watching the two of them the whole time. He had no idea what they were whispering about.
He couldn’t sit still anymore. With a sharp movement, he sprang up from the couch. “What are you talking about? You’ve been talking forever. What’s there to talk about?”
Draven lifted his composed gaze and spoke calmly. “We’re talking about what kind of brother-in-law you’d be willing to accept.”
In an instant, Kaleb’s mind filled with countless conditions. In the end, they all added up to someone on the same level as Draven. Anyone he could imagine would be top-tier. And Draven just happened to fit that description.
Kaleb immediately shut down. “You’ve got nothing better to do? Why talk about this?”
Ayla glanced at Draven. His answer isn’t wrong. It even managed to irritate Kaleb. He’s pretty devious. She followed up. “So? What are your conditions?”
Kaleb shot her a glare. “You’re asking me? Just pick whoever you like. Even if I had objections, you wouldn’t

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
