He’d loved the same person for so many years. How could he easily fall for someone else?
Every time Mia was around Leo, her heart ached. She felt an urgent need to escape.
Leo’s world seemed to only have room for Quinn-no one else.
“I don’t want anyone else. I just want you,” Leo said casually, like it was no big deal.
“Stop teasing me.” Quinn laughed. “Don’t say things like that. If someone hears, it’ll cause trouble. I’m getting engaged soon. I need to watch my image.”
“Who would’ve thought you’d care about your image now? That’s a first,” Leo chuckled.
But his heart felt heavy. His sincere words had been brushed off as a joke. To save himself from embarrassment, he had to play along.
Deep down, he meant every word. But he knew no one would take him seriously.
“Mia, toast Leo,” Quinn suggested, still trying to create opportunities for them. “I’ve been tied up with family stuff lately, but you’ve been well taken care of at his company. You should thank him.”
Mia stood up quickly, grabbing her glass as instructed.
She took a sip and said sincerely, “Mr. Harrison, I want to toast you. Thank you and your team for taking care of me these past few weeks. I didn’t know much about patents at first, but you never made me feel incompetent.
“Everyone helped me so much. I’m truly grateful.”
But in her heart, she thought.
He’s only being nice because I’m Quinn’s assistant.
“No need to be so formal,” Leo replied casually. “You work for Quinn. She only hires the best.”
Mia summoned her courage and downed the entire glass.
She was so nervous that she could barely control her emotions. It was hard to stay calm around someone she liked, especially when every word he said touched her heart.
“Mia, you’re not a big drinker. Take it easy,” Quinn said, concerned. She knew Mia was drinking to build up
courage.
Otherwise, she’d never be able to face Leo.
But this was something Mia had to get used to on her own. Quinn couldn’t help her with matters of the
heart.
“I’m fine, really. This is nothing to me,” Mia insisted. “But I wanted to show my gratitude with this drink.”
After finishing the glass, Mia’s face flushed bright red. Her stomach felt like it was on fire.

She’d never drunk alcohol before. She’d never had any interest in it. But tonight, she was so upset that she wanted to numb her feelings with liquor.
“Alright,” she said, standing up.
“You two talk. I need to use the restroom.”
Mia felt terrible, like she was going to throw up. She had to leave immediately.
Quinn was worried about her. “Mia, I’ll go with you. Look at you. You shouldn’t drink so much next time.”
“It’s okay, Miss Hart. I can go alone,” Mia said firmly.
She didn’t need anyone’s comfort right now. She just wanted to calm down by herself.
Seeing how stubborn she was, Quinn nodded and let her go.
“What’s
wrong with your assistant tonight?” Leo asked, noticing her odd behavior. “She doesn’t look well. Did something happen?”
Quinn didn’t tell him the truth. “She’s probably just excited-and tired from working so hard lately.”
“Leo, what do you think of Mia?” she suddenly asked.
Leo froze, confused. “She’s just your assistant, right? What do you mean? Her work performance? Or her personality?”
He had no idea where this question was coming from.
“I mean her as a person-what do you think of her?” Quinn repeated, serious now.
Leo let out a cold laugh. “What does that have to do with me?”
Mia, who had just calmed down in the restroom, heard his words clearly. She lifted the corner of her mouth in a bitter, self-deprecating smile.
