“Alright, it’s already happened. There’s no use dwelling on it,” Iris said calmly. “Peyton is taking care of her because he’s a responsible man. That’s one of his best qualities.

“If he didn’t care for her, he’d live with guilt for the rest of his life. This burden would never leave him. It’s a good thing for him to see this through, though it does mean Quinn is getting the short end of the stick.”

Iris was sensible, always looking at things from an objective perspective.

Peyton had inherited her personality. He felt guilty easily and took his responsibilities seriously.

“You’re right, Mrs. Iris Reed,” Doris agreed. “Quinn will understand. She knew about all this before they got engaged. Now that they’re committing to each other, they have to face it together.

“Quinn would do the same if the tables were turned. If they have any issues because of this, I’m sure they can work it out by talking openly.”

Doris spoke earnestly.

“But I know you’re only looking out for Quinn. I feel relieved knowing she’ll have such a caring elder when she marries into your family. You truly have her best interests at heart,”

Doris was deeply moved. She knew her daughter would be happy marrying into a family where her husband’s mom cared so much for her.

“Alright, let’s let them know we’re here,” Iris said. “Tell both of them to come home. We can discuss everything together.” She simply missed them and wanted to see them soon.

Quinn was shocked when she got the call from home. She never expected them to show up unannounced. But she immediately put down her work and rushed back.

Peyton, however, was still at the rehabilitation center with Wendy. He frowned deeply when he got the call.

He had a feeling this was Eleanor’s idea-she’d come to confront him.

Peyton felt helpless, but he had no choice. Wendy’s session was only halfway done. If he left now, she’d be devastated.

So he didn’t rush to leave. He figured they wouldn’t leave right away, so he’d have time to finish things here first before heading home.

Quinn felt overwhelmed facing the three of them alone. She didn’t know what to say.

On her way back, she’d already texted Peyton to update him on the situation at home.

“Go home alone,” he replied. “I’ll head back as soon as I’m done here to be with you. Tell them the truth about everything. No need to cover for me. We can’t hide this forever. Besides, I didn’t do anything wrong. There’s nothing to be afraid of saying.”

Peyton was straightforward, but he knew his mother’s temper. If he made her truly angry, she’d never let him go see Wendy again. She might even lock him up at home to stop him from leaving.

“Okay, I understand,” Quinn texted back.

“I’ll explain everything to them. I really didn’t tell them anything about us, though. I have no idea why they showed up like this.”

Quinn was confused the entire way home. She couldn’t figure out why they’d come so suddenly. There were some things she didn’t want to be the one to say.

Soon, she arrived home.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, Mrs. Reed, Mom, why are you all here together?” she asked, greeting them warmly with an awkward smile. Her heart was racing with nervousness. “You didn’t even call first. I was busy with work at the studio.”

“Quinn, I could tell you were upset when I called earlier,” Eleanor said, stepping forward to hold her hands, her voice full of concern. “Did Peyton upset you again? And that woman-Wendy!”

“Mrs. Reed, it’s not like that. Peyton treats me really well,” Quinn assured her. “He tells me everything in advance. We always make decisions together. I know he’s with Wendy for her rehabilitation sessions.

“Peyton and I feel the same way. We both want Wendy to walk again. That way, he won’t have to live with guilt anymore. He’d be thinking about it every day otherwise.

“We’re getting engaged soon. I have to accept this. His problems are my problems now. We have to face them together.”

Quinn had already come to terms with everything. She wanted to resolve this as soon as possible.
