Ever since they’d gotten together, their relationship had always been lukewarm. Sometimes Peyton was sweet and attentive, going out of his way to care for her. But other times, they felt more like strangers than a couple.
They were always busy with their own lives. Even the time they spent together felt like a chore. Quinn. struggled with their relationship, unsure how to fix it.
Peyton never talked about their issues. He was too scared to admit the truth-their engagement was a sham. They hadn’t even been intimate like a real couple. How could they have a baby?
If Iris found out, she’d never forgive him. So he kept quiet, too afraid to mention it. He’d held back out of respect for Quinn, wanting things to happen naturally.
Since they’d met, he’d never forced her to do anything. All he wanted was for her to truly accept his love someday-then let things progress on their own. Forcing it would only pressure her.
But to Quinn, his hesitation felt like disinterest. He was kind to her-too kind to complain about. But when it came to feelings, he was hot and cold.
They were both so busy they rarely had time to sit down and talk. Quinn didn’t know how to face Iris. Their only unspoken agreement? Keeping their “friendship-only” status a secret from the family.
They arrived home soon after. The staff had prepared dinner, and everyone gathered to welcome Iris back. She’d always been kind to the household, so their warmth was genuine. Everyone was relieved she’d returned safely.
They’d barely stepped inside when Harold and his family arrived. “Mom, why didn’t you tell me you were leaving the hospital?” Harold said as he walked in. “I only found out because the maid called.”
“How’s your recovery going?” he asked, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “I wanted to visit, but I’ve been swamped with family issues. Their engagement has caused so much trouble for us.”
Harold complained nonstop, shooting dirty looks at Peyton and Quinn. Iris wanted to ignore them, but she couldn’t let the house turn into a battlefield.
Just seeing them gave her a headache. She usually avoided arguing, but they’d crossed the line too many times.
“You know how I am,” Iris said sharply. “I can’t handle stess. If you’re here to visit, I appreciate it. Now sit down and let’s have a peaceful meal.
“When family problems arise, we should solve them together-not point fingers. If all you’re gonna do is criticize, there’s no point in being here.”
Iris was already disappointed in Harold’s family. Their havior today only made her angrier. The family had never been close, but they’d always put on a polite ont.
Since Quinn joined the family, they’d stopped pretendig. All their anger was now directed at her. Harold resented Peyton for inheriting the family fortune, but I took it out on Quinn instead. She was the innocent one caught in the crossfire.
But there was nothing Iris could do. She was getting older, too tired to argue.
“Mom, we’re just here to check on you,” Harold said, feigning concern. “You’re misunderstanding us.

“Besides, it’s the truth. He did what he did-why is he afraid of people talking? Everyone out there is gossiping about us. You’ve heard the terrible things they say.”

Harold didn’t care about Iris’ feelings. He’d been worried when she was sick, but now that she was better, he was back to stirring up trouble with his cruel words.
