Eleanor knew her biggest mistake in life could never be undone. The truth was out, and there was no way to fix it.
But over the years, she and Iris had formed a deep bond. If Iris couldn’t forgive them, they’d have no choice but to leave.
“Mom, let the past stay in the past. No need to dwell on it,” Peyton said gently.
“Even if we leave the Reeds, I can still provide for you. I make sure your life doesn’t change a bit,” he promised.
Peyton had no reason to resent his mother. She’d been forced into her choices. What’s done was done. Even if the whole world turned its back on her, he never would.
Tears streamed down Eleanor’s face at his words. “Peyton, I knew you’d never blame me. I was so happy when you were born-you’re the little one I’d give my life to protect.”
“You’ve always been smart and sensible. I’m so proud of you,” she said.
“Your father and I never loved each other, but you brought so much joy to my life. You gave me a reason to stay in this family. I knew if I endured, your future would be better.”
Everything she’d done over the years-all the patience and sacrifice-had been for Peyton.
Peyton understood. Even though his parents’ marriage was loveless, his mother had never neglected him. She was always rational, never forcing her problems or burdens on him.
“Mom, I know you did it all for me. You’ve been swallowing your pride all these years,” he said softly.
Peyton’s father had been living abroad for years, with a new family of his own-a wife and a child around Peyton’s age. Iris had never accepted them.
She’d told Peyton’s father: if he chose that woman, he’d never be welcome back. And he’d kept his word- he’d never returned.
Iris never spoke of him, forbidding anyone in the family to mention his name.
Quinn had never known any of this. Her mother had never told her, not wanting to burden her.
Now she understood why no one ever talked about Peyton’s father. Their marriage had fallen apart long ago, and both had moved on.
Eleanor had stayed in the Reed family all these years to ight for Peyton’s rightful inheritance.
“Quinn, I’m sorry I lied to you,” Eleanor said sincerely. You and Peyton are only engaged, not married. If you have other options or doubts, please tell me-I’ll understand.”
She knew their engagement had been family-arranged. Now with the family in chaos, she didn’t want to drag Quinn down.
But Quinn didn’t care about any of that. She’d never thought of leaving
“Mrs. Reed, we were introduced by our families, but I’ve never wanted to leave him-not for something like this,” she said firmly. “Whether he’s a Reed or not does matter to me. It won’t change how I feel about
