“Mia, you’re such a wonderful girl,” Quinn said gently. “You don’t have to rush this. I promise you’ll meet someone who’s perfect for you-someone who’ll love and cherish you with all his heart.

“I know you’re probably hurting right now. I hesitated a lot before telling you the truth. But I figured it was better to let you know sooner rather than later. That way you won’t waste any more of your precious time on him.

“Don’t be sad. I’ll give you a few days off. Go out, take a trip, and clear your head.”

Quinn was never good at comforting people when it came to matters of the heart. She didn’t know what else to say.

All she could do was offer some kind words and give Mil the time she needed to heal and move on.

“No need, Miss Hart. I’m fine, really. I’m not that fragile Mia replied, her voice steady despite the lump in her throat. “But thank you-for everything. For trying to set us up all this time, and for always looking out for me.”

Warmth spread through Mia’s chest. Quinn had done so much for her, and she’d truly cared about making things work between her and Leo.

Even though Leo’s heart belonged to Quinn, Quinn had no idea about that. It wasn’t her fault at all. Mia couldn’t blame her for any of this.

She only had herself to blame-for falling in love with someone who was never meant to be hers.

Mia didn’t say anything else. She just hung up the phone.

As soon as she set the phone down, tears streamed down her face. A sharp, hollow ache gnawed at her chest -an indescribable pain that left her breathless.

But why aml hurting so badly? I and Leo have never even had a chance to be together. He’s practically a stranger to me. So why does his rejection feel like such a devastating blow?

On the other end of the line, Quinn couldn’t stop worrying about Mia. Mia had poured her heart and soul into this crush. She’d been so genuine, so sincere about her feelings for Leo. To have it all end without even a real start-it was heartbreaking.

Quinn was also dying of curiosity.

Why is Leo so uninterested in other women? Who’s this mystery person who’s captured his heart so completely, making him so unshakable in his resolve?

“Quinn, why do you always go out of your way to medd in other people’s love lives?” Kieran said, overhearing her conversation. “Matters of the heart can be forced. You know that, right?”

Kieran didn’t approve of Quinn sticking her nose in this mess. He hated seeing her get tangled up in other people’s romantic problems.

More often than not, she’d end up getting hurt or unappreciated for her efforts.

But Kieran knew Quinn’s personality all too well. When came to her friends and her assistant, she’d never turn a blind eye to their troubles. She just couldn’t help herself.

“I know, Kieran,” Quinn sighed, sounding frustrated and helpless. “But I just couldn’t bear to see Mia being so earnest and hopeful about this. It broke my heart to watch her get her hopes up like that.”

She’d spent weeks trying to set things up for Mia and Leo. She’d truly wanted them to give it a shot, to see if something could blossom between them. Even if it didnt work out in the end, at least they would’ve had a chance to try.

“Alright, let her be,” Peyton chimed in. “When your siste sets her mind to something, there’s no stopping her. But if you ask me, those two were never a match to begin with. They’re from two completely different worlds. Even if they’d gotten together, they would’ve only ended up hurting each other in the long run.

“Right now, Mia might be in pain, but it’s a short-term hurt. She’ll recover from this and move on sooner rather than later. If they’d actually dated and then broken up? That would’ve left far deeper scars.

“Some things are better left to unfold naturally. We outsiders shouldn’t meddle too much.”

Peyton hadn’t been involved in this whole fiasco, but he heard Quinn talking about it plenty of times before.

“You’re right. We really shouldn’t interfere too much,” Quinn agreed glumly. “But I can’t help feeling sorry for her. She’s such a hardworking, sincere girl. I hate seeing her get hurt like this because of love.”

Quinn sounded truly helpless. There was nothing she could do to ease Mia’s pain. All she could do was watch as Mia’s crush fizzled out before it even had a chance to begin.

“So let’s just stay out of it and focus on our own problems,” Kieran said, shaking his head.

He was starting to get a headache from all this. Quinn was completely oblivious to what was really going on. Peyton was such a responsible man-he’d been shouldering all the company’s problems on his own, not wanting to burden Quinn with any of it.

If she knew the full extent of the crisis the company was facing, she’d be too worried to care about anyone else’s romantic troubles. She’d have her hands full dealing with her own stress and anxiety.

The main reason Kieran was even here, offering to help Peyton, was because he believed Peyton was a good man-someone worthy of Quinn’s love and trust. And to show his support, Kieran had made up his mind to hand over the Hart family’s biggest project to Peyton’s company.
