“He’s never been the type to dump his burdens on others.” Quinn said quietly. “He never talks about the problems he’s dealing with at the company. But I see it all, loud and clear.”

At this point, the only thing she could do was be there for him.

“Alright, worrying yourself sick won’t fix anything,” Kieran said, cutting her off. “Just focus on your own stuff. Later, we’ll all sit down and enjoy a nice meal together. It’s been ages since I’ve had a proper chat with you

two.

“Mom and Dad are planning a trip abroad soon. I already booked their tickets. They want you to come home for a few days before they leave. If you have time you can go back with me.”

Kieran changed the subject on purpose. He didn’t want to talk about work anymore. He didn’t want Quinn to keep stressing over things she couldn’t control.

“Sure, that sounds great!” Quinn replied, perking up a little. “They definitely deserve a nice getaway. They’ve wrapped up all their stuff anyway.”

Quinn’s parents had been head over heels in love since she was a kid. They always looked out for each other, always put each other first.

They had a son and a daughter. By all accounts, they’d built a perfect life. But Quinn couldn’t help thinking about how she’d been such a handful growing up. She’d caused them so much trouble, added so much stress to their lives.

“Then it’s a deal!” Kieran said with a smile.

As they talked, Peyton walked back in. He could tell they were having a good chat, and he’d caught the tail end of their conversation about going home together.

“I’ve got a ton of work to handle at the company these days,” Peyton said, turning to Quinn. “I won’t be able to go back with you. You’ll have to head home with Kieran first. I’ll come pick you up as soon as I’m free.”

Under normal circumstances, Peyton would drop everything to go home with her. But right now, the company was in total chaos. He couldn’t afford to step away, even for a minute.

“Don’t worry about it,” Kieran said, waving a hand dismissively. “You think I won’t take good care of my own sister? She probably won’t even stay long anyway-Mom and Dad are leaving for their trip soon.”

He spoke slowly, his tone gentle. He knew Peyton was swamped lately. If he took Quinn home, it would take one more thing off Peyton’s plate. Besides, their parents had missed their daughter like crazy ever since she and Peyton had made up. They’d cherish every second he spent with them.

“Okay,” Peyton agreed with a nod.

Kieran had brought a bottle of wine with him today, specifically to share with Peyton. He knew Peyton had been through hell lately, carrying the weight of the wort on his shoulders.

No matter how strong or capable a man was, he couldn’ keep pushing himself like this forever. Eventually, the stress would wear him down. He’d break.

And there were plenty of people waiting in the wings for that to happen. People who wanted to see him fall flat on his face. Peyton couldn’t let that happen-not now, not ever.

“Peyton, this little hiccup is nothing compared to what you’re capable of,” Kieran said, raising his glass. “You don’t have to let it get to you. Sooner or later, everything will work itself out.”

Kieran wasn’t one for long, mushy speeches. But tonight he couldn’t help but offer a few words of encouragement. He knew Peyton had been suffering in silence, bottling up all that pressure instead of sharing it with anyone else.

“Don’t worry,” Peyton said, clinking his glass against Kieran’s. “I’ll fix the company’s problems. I won’t give those vultures a single opening. Grandma put her trust in me. I have to live up to that-no matter what.”

Peyton had always been the type to carry his burdens alone. He never let anyone else share the load.

“I know you will,” Kieran said firmly.

They drained their glasses in one go. For a brief moment, Peyton felt the weight on his shoulders lift a little. He felt lighter, more at ease.
