“As Iris’ family, you need to stay by her side at all times, the doctor said gravely. “Keep a close eye on her, and never let her get upset again. I know your family situation is complicated right now, but her condition is critical. One wrong move could be fatal.”

The doctor laid out the severity of the situation first. Then he pulled up Iris’ scans and walked them through her current condition, explaining all the potential risks in plain terms.

“This is something you two must take seriously. Stay vigilant-always.”

“Iris is already advanced in years. I wouldn’t recommend any more surgeries,” he added firmly. “She’s already been through one major operation, and that alone put her life at risk. Another procedure would be far too dangerous.”

For a younger patient, surgery would have been the obvious choice for this heart condition. But Iris was too old. Chances were she wouldn’t even survive being wheeled off the operating table.

“We understand how serious this is, Doctor,” Peyton said his voice tight with worry. “We know her condition is far from good. That’s why we’re here. We need you to help us find a way to make her better. To help her recover as soon as possible.

“I know her body inside and out better than anyone. But I can’t stand seeing her like this. I need to find a way to make her well again.”

That was his only real goal right now. But with surgery off the table, he had no idea what else to do.

“Right now, medication is the only option to keep her stable,” the doctor replied, shaking his head gently. “Even the most advanced drugs we have can’t keep her heart functioning smoothly forever, though.

“So you two need to prepare yourselves. Her condition is precarious. She could have a sudden episode at any time.”

The doctor wasn’t trying to scare them. He was just telling them the cold, hard truth.

Iris’ heart problem was severe. Without the constant support of expensive, imported medication, she wouldn’t have made it this far. But those drugs came at steep price-one that not every family could afford.

“Thank you, Doctor. We’ll be extra careful,” Peyton said, his jaw set. “But I have one request. I want to find the best medication available-anything that can keep her going. Money is no object. I’ll pay whatever it takes, as long as she doesn’t have to suffer every single day.”

Peyton didn’t care about the cost. He’d worked tirelessly all these years just to give his family a good life-to keep them safe and healthy. Now, watching Iris lie in that hospital bed, so weak and fragile, he felt a crushing sense of despair.

“The medication Iris is on right now is already the best the world,” the doctor said softly. “There’s nothing more effective out there. But over time, her body will build up a tolerance to it. She’ll become dependent on higher and higher doses just to get the same effect.

“She’s too old to handle all that strain. And if you’re thinking about pushing for surgery? Her body simply can’t take it. She might not even make it through the procedure. I urge you to think very carefully about

this.”

The doctor could see the desperation in Peyton’s eyes. I knew Peyton was still clinging to the idea of

When they walked out of the doctor’s office, both of them were silent. Their faces were grim, no trace of a smile left.

They stood outside Iris’ hospital room, staring through the glass at her sleeping form. A wave of sadness washed over them both.

“Grandma wouldn’t be in this condition if it weren’t for me,” Peyton said quietly, his voice breaking. “If I’d just given up the company sooner, none of this would have happened. She wouldn’t be lying in there right

now.”

Peyton had wanted to walk away from the company a long time ago. If he’d stepped down, Harold’s family would have stopped their constant bickering. Iris could have spent her days in peace.

But Iris had refused to let him quit. She didn’t trust anyone else to run the company. And now, he was stuck in an impossible situation.

Quinn stared at him in disbelief. “Peyton, you can’t be serious about giving up the company,” she said, her voice rising slightly. “I know you’re doing this for your grandma’s sake. But have you stopped to think about why she trusts you with it in the first place?

“If you hand the company over to them, they’ll drain it dry in no time. All of your grandma’s hard work- her entire life’s legacy-will be destroyed. Do you really think that’s what she wants? Do you think that won’t break her heart?”

Even at her age, Iris was still sharp as a tack. She kept a close eye on every detail of the company’s operations. Everyone could see how much the company meant to her.

“But if I stay at the company, they’ll never stop,” Peyton argued, frustration evident in his tone. “Their only goal is to torment Grandma until she caves. I’m out of options here, Quinn. I don’t know what else to do.

“I’ve spent months getting the company back on track. It’s finally stable again. If I hand it over to them, I’m sure they can keep it running. And if I step down voluntarily? They won’t have any reason to cause more trouble. They’ll leave Grandma alone.”
