Iris knew her own body better than anyone. She didn’t want to waste any more time-least of all theirs.
The only reason she still held on was to see the company stabilize. She couldn’t bring herself to let go of something she’d built her whole life.
Looking back on her life, Iris felt like a failure. Her two sons were complete disappointments. Neither of them cared about their own mother.
And the grandson she trusted most-he wasn’t even her biological blood. She’d made peace with that, but a twinge of sadness still lingered in her heart.
“Mrs. Reed, your health will get better. I know it will,” Quinn said softly. She struggled to find the right words to comfort Iris. Seeing her like this broke her heart.
“Grandma, there’s something I want to talk to you about Peyton said, gathering his courage. “The biggest conflict in our family right now is because I inherited the company. I’m willing to step down-let Uncle Harold take over. The company is stable now. I think he can handle it.”
Peyton brought it up on his own. He understood why Iris hadn’t handed the company to Harold before- she didn’t trust him. But things were different now. Harold had some management skills. He just hadn’t bothered to use them over the years, knowing Iris would never give him full control.
“What did you say?” Iris’ smile faded instantly. She froze staring at Peyton in shock.
“I know Uncle Harold is upset with you and me,” Peyton continued. “I don’t want you to get stressed out over this anymore. So I want to hand the company over to him completely.
“But don’t worry. Stepping down doesn’t mean I’ll walk away. If he needs help with anything. I’ll be there- do whatever it takes to keep the company running.”
Peyton still cared about the company’s future. He just had no other choice but to step aside.
Iris let out a heavy sigh. “Honey, your words mean the world to me,” she said gently. “But you know things aren’t that simple. He can’t handle the company-not really.
“You saw what happened this time. So many people are waiting to pounce, trying to take over our family’s business. I could hand it to him, but how long do you think he’d last in that position?”
Iris saw everything clearly. Her words made perfect sens
“Our family is torn apart right now, but at least the company is in our own hands. I don’t trust anyone else with it.”
Everyone was waiting to laugh at them, to swoop in and ake the company when it fell apart.
“I know what you’re thinking. I know you’re doing this for me.” Iris said “But the company isn’t a game. You can’t just give it up on a whim.
“They’re throwing a fit because they’re jealous. But if the company suffers huge losses, our whole family will pay the price. That’s why I need you to run it. Only you make me feel at ease”
Iris’ only focus now was getting the company back on track, making sure Peyton and Quinn could manage it well together.

Iris’ words left Peyton with no room to argue. He knew was useless to press the issue further.
