“And let’s be real-you’ve already proven yourself,” Iris said firmly. “The company’s stable again because of you. You have what it takes. So why doubt yourself?”

Iris knew Peyton was only talking about stepping down to protect her. But no matter what, she couldn’t let him leave the company.

Her heart ached for him. She knew he’d been crushed under the pressure lately. He’d never make such a choice unless he had no other option.

“Grandma, I get it. I promise-no more talk about quitting. I won’t give up on the company,” Peyton said softly.

He’d been set on his decision before. But Iris’ words had changed everything. He couldn’t bear to walk away -not when the company meant so much to her. And deep down, he couldn’t stand the thought of letting it fall into someone else’s hands.

“I know you’ve been under a ton of stress,” Iris said, her voice softening. “I see how tough it’s been for you. There are days you probably feel stuck, like you can’t win.

“But you never threw in the towel. You kept fighting, kept fixing things. I don’t say it often, but I notice. I always have.

“So go ahead-do what you need to do. Even if the company fails someday, even if it gets taken from us, I’ll never blame you. We tried our best. That’s all anyone can ask for.”

Iris was old, but she was wise. She saw life clearly, didn’t get hung up on the things she couldn’t control.

“Grandma, I’d do anything for this company. And I know-I can’t afford to fail. I won’t let your life’s work end up in someone else’s hands,” Peyton vowed.

That one sentence was all Iris needed to hear. She felt a wave of relief. She’d made the right choice, trusting him with everything.

“Good. That’s settled, then. No more talk about leaving ever,” Iris said with a smile.

“You two caring so much… it warms my heart. Just seeing you both makes me feel better already.”

Iris beamed at them, her eyes crinkling with joy. She was so happy Peyton had found someone like Quinn- someone who loved him, who fit right into the family.

Quinn was a blessing. Finding a girl this kind, this good it was rare. Iris cherished her more than words could say.

They were sitting there, the three of them, in peaceful sence-until Harold and Donna burst into the

room.

Iris’ smile vanished instantly. Her face hardened the second she saw them

“Mom, why didn’t you tell us you were sick?” Harold spoke up fust, feigning concern. I never would’ve known if I hadn’t stopped by the house.”

“I don’t need you two here. I don’t need your care. Go home,” Iris snapped. Her voice was cold, no patience for their games. She didn’t want to waste a single word them-let alone look at them.

Every time this couple showed up, chaos followed. They ruined every moment of peace, tore at the family’s already frayed bonds. She was done with it.

“Iris, look at you-you’re barely holding on. Who else is gonna take care of you? These two outsiders?” Donna sneered. Her eyes darted between Peyton and Quinn, sharp with contempt.

She’d noticed how good they were at sucking up to Iris. Heard they’d rushed her to the hospital the second she’d gotten sick. It made her blood boil.

“And let’s not forget-Iris’ body can’t handle all this trouble. She’s already suffering, and you drag her to this dump? What are you really up to?”
