Iris’ constant coldness cut Harold and Donna to the bong. It hurt-more than they cared to admit.
“Enough!” Iris snapped. “Let’s stop pretending. You’d never set foot here if it wasn’t for the company. Don’t think I don’t see through your little act.
“Peyton just talked to me. He’s willing to step down-hand over full control of the company to you. But I said no. Because you don’t deserve it.”
Iris held nothing back this time. Her words were sharp, nyielding.
“Mom, am I really that worthless in your eyes?” Harold’s voice cracked with emotion. “Honestly, it breaks my heart. Why won’t you trust me just once? Give me the company-I swear I’ll run it right. Just give me a
chance.”
Harold was beside himself with frustration. He’d never imagined Peyton would actually give up the company-willingly hand it back to him. And Iris had shot it down flat.
Donna panicked silently beside him. They’d been handed the opportunity of a lifetime, and Iris had ruined it. All their scheming, all their fighting… it had actually worked. Peyton was ready to fold. They just needed to keep pushing.
“Enough! Can’t you two just leave me alone?” Iris groaned. She couldn’t stand another second of their
nonsense.
“If you want me to live a little longer, stay away. This is my decision-no one else’s. And if I catch you meddling where you don’t belong again, I won’t be so nice.”
Iris realized she’d been too soft on them over the years. That’s why they’d grown so bold, so arrogant.
She wasn’t going to put up with it anymore. She wanted them out of her life-for good.
“Mom, we didn’t come here to fight,” Harold said, trying to sound calm. “We just wanted to check on you.”
“Well, you’ve seen me. I’m fine. Now get out.”
Iris’ condition had stabilized after treatment at the hospital. But the second she saw Harold and Donna, her heart started racing again.
She knew she could never shake them off for good. They were like leeches-always popping up when she least wanted them.
“Let’s go,” Harold muttered. He saw no point in staying ris was too worked up, and he was starting to get scared-scared she’d have another heart attack right in ont of them.
Donna refused to leave so easily. But Harold grabbed he arm and dragged her out of the room, no room for argument.
“Why are you in such a hurry to leave?” Donna snapped once they were in the hallway. I didn’t even finish talking! We didn’t get anything done!”
“Didn’t you hear her? Peyton’s ready to quit the compar. Harold said, a smirk spreading across his face. If that’s the case, I’ve got a better plan.”
Harold was full of tricks. And he was dead set on getting the company back-no matter what.

“Every time you say you have a plan, it never works!” Donna huffed. “I’m tired of your empty promises.”
“Before, I didn’t have Peyton admitting he’d step down. Mom would never let him leave the company on her own. But now that he’s willing? Mom’s just putting on a show.
“I’m gonna call my brother back. He can’t hide abroad forever. He needs to know what’s going on here- especially with Mom so sick. When he comes back, the whole family will be in chaos.
“Then, if things get out of hand, we can blame it all on him. We have to get him here.”
Harold had been planning this for a long time. He’d thought of every angle. His brother had been hiding overseas, enjoying the quiet life while the rest of the family fell apart. It was time he came home and faced. the music.
“What if he wants the company too?” Donna asked, worried. “Then we’ll have two people to fight against.”
“Relax. He couldn’t care less about the company. He’s been gone for years. Even if he did want it, do you think Mom would let him have it?” Harold scoffed.
Harold had it all figured out. Every detail, every possible outcome. He was certain this plan would work. His brother was the key-and he was going to bring him home, whether he liked it or not.
