Quinn trailed off, suddenly at a loss for words. At the end of the day, there was no real conflict between. Kieran and Hazel-only a painful past that refused to stay buried.

“But I can’t forgive myself,” Hazel whispered, her voice breaking. “I never should’ve let myself fall for him in the first place. I don’t deserve this-deserve him.”

She was convinced she’d never find love again. She planned to spend the rest of her life alone, never letting anyone get close enough to uncover her secrets. Never having to face this kind of heartbreak again.

“Hazel, don’t say that,” Quinn urged, her tone earnest. “You’re amazing-smart, talented, beautiful. You deserve every good thing life has to offer. What happened in the past is done. You can’t change it, so don’t let it chain you down.

“Trust me—and trust my brother. If you two can get through this now, when you’re still new to each other? You’ll be unstoppable later. Imagine if this comes out after you are married. You’ll be so much more vulnerable. This is a good thing-it’s a test, and you both can pass it.”

Quinn spoke from the heart, desperate to fix what was broken. She hated seeing two people who clearly cared about each other throw everything away.

Hazel’s eyes were vacant, her mind stuck on the pain of her past. She shook her head firmly, her resolve unshakable.

“There were times I wanted to end it all,” she admitted, her voice hollow. “I wanted to run away from everything-from the memories, from the pain. I had no will to keep going.

“Then I found the courage to keep living. I decided I’d be better off alone… until I met your brother. He was like a ray of sunshine in my dark world. I fell for him before I even realized what was happening But I never thought he’d find out about my past.

“I tried to fight it-I didn’t want to drag him into my mess. But I couldn’t help how I felt I got greedy. I wanted to be happy, even if I didn’t deserve it. Now I know I was wrong.”

Hazel’s tone was final. She’d made up her mind, and there was no changing it.

She couldn’t face Kieran-not now that he knew the truth about her. Not now that he’d seen the broken parts of her she’d worked so hard to hide.

Being alone suddenly sounded like a blessing No more secrets. No more fear of being judges Just peace and quiet, and no one to hurt her-or be hurt by her

“Hazel, Quinn started, but Hazel cut her off

“Don’t try to convince me, Quinn like you-really, 1 st I hope we can still be friends, it you want that. But me and your brother? It’s over. There’s no going back

“Relationships are different from anything else I can compromise on a lot of things I can let things slude But not this. Never this. I can’t let anyone see me like th-broken, damaged unworthy

Her voice was steely, no room for argument. She’d close that door, and she had no intention of opening it again.

“Fine. If that’s what you really want, I won’t push you,” Gunn said, defeated. “This is your relationship- yours and Kieran’s. I’m just an outsider. I don’t get a say

“But please just think about it. Don’t throw everything away on a whim. Give yourself time to breathe before you make a decision you can’t take back.”

Quinn still thought it was a mistake. They were perfect for each other, and it killed her to see them throw it

all away.

“I will,” Hazel said, though her tone suggested she’d alrearly made up her mind. She was just being polite to Quinn.

“You haven’t eaten since yesterday, have you?” Quinn said, eyeing her pale, drawn face. “You look terrible. Let me take you out for something to eat-please.”

Guilt gnawed at her. If she hadn’t dug into Hazel’s past, none of this would’ve happened. Kieran and Hazel would still be happy, and this secret would’ve stayed buried forever.

“I’m not hungry,” Hazel mumbled. “I don’t feel well. I just want to stay home.”

“Alright, I’ll leave you alone then,” Quinn said, standing up. “But call me if you need anything-anything at all. I’ll be here in a second. Even if things don’t work out with my brother, we’re still friends. That’s not going
