“You two just started dating,” Quinn said quietly, her voice heavy with guilt. “Even if you break up now, it’s cutting your losses early. This is all my fault. If I hadn’t dug into her past, none of this would’ve happened.”
Her mind was a mess. She felt just as torn up as Kieran and Hazel did. She had no clue how to fix any of it.
She never should’ve looked into Hazel’s background. If the truth had come out later, it would’ve been Kieran and Hazel’s problem to handle. She wouldn’t be drowning in this guilt right now.
“This isn’t your fault,” Kieran said firmly. “I was bound to find out sooner or later. Even if you hadn’t investigated, it would’ve come out some other way. You have nothing to feel guilty about.
“You’ve been stressed out over this for days. I’m the one who dragged you into this mess. I’m sorry, Quinn.”
Kieran hated seeing his sister worry about him. He never wanted his relationship drama to become her burden.
“Stop saying that,” Quinn said, her eyes softening. “We’re blood. Your problems are my problems. It kills me to see you so heartbroken.
“I only looked into her because I’ve been burned by love before. I didn’t want you to go through the same pain. I wanted to protect you.
“But I never imagined her past was this painful… that it would blow up like this.”
Quinn sighed, helpless. She didn’t know what else to say!
“It’s okay, Quinn,” Kieran said gently. “You did all this because you care about me. I should be thanking you.”
He never blamed his sister. He knew she’d only had his best interests at heart.
“Alright, I gotta go. Peyton’s calling me,” Quinn said, glancing at her phone.
She hung up with her brother, then answered Peyton’s call right away.
“Can you come with me? My dad’s back in town,” Peyton said, his voice flat,
He still didn’t know what to call the man. He’d called him dad when he was a kid, but that felt like a lifetime
ago.
“What?” Quinn gasped, stunned. She never expected Brandon to come home-let alone this suddenly.
“Okay, give me a minute to get ready. I’ll be right therel
Quinn had no idea why Brandon was back, or what he wanted. But she knew they had no choice but to face him head-on.
The two of them arrived at Reed Manor together. The whole family was already there, gathered around Iris.
Iris’ face was like thunder. It was clear something ugly had gone down right before they walked in-and Brandon was definitely at the center of it.
“Grandma, I’m home,” Peyton said, his voice calm as he walked into the room. His eyes locked onto Iris. ignoring everyone else for a second.

Then he glanced at Brandon. His gaze was cold, distant like he was looking at a stranger, not the man who’d fathered him.
Their relationship had been strained for years. Ever since Brandon had abandoned the family decades ago, run off abroad, and cheated on Eleanor to start a new family.
Peyton had hated him for it. Hated him for walking away, for never looking back, for never caring about the son he left behind. After all these years, they were still nothing more than strangers.
