Brandon glared at her, his eyes burning with resentment. He’d never thought he’d be stuck with this label- stuck with it for all these years.

“Enough!” Iris snapped, her voice trembling with rage. “Can you two just shut up and talk like civilized people? If you want me to live a little longer, stop yelling in my house!”

Iris’ whole body shook with anger. Her chest felt tight, her heart pounding wildly. Her health had been fragile lately. She’d been in and out of treatment for weeks.

A team of top specialists, hired by Peyton, had run a full checkup on her not long ago. They’d made it crystal clear-her condition was unstable. Any sudden shock could be fatal.

The doctors had warned them repeatedly: medication and surgery wouldn’t fix the irreversible damage to her heart. The only way to keep her alive was to let her rest easy, keep her happy, and shield her from any stress. But watching her family tear each other apart? There was no way she could stay calm.

Peyton had known this homecoming would spell trouble. It was obvious Brandon and Harold had teamed up against him. Those two brothers used to fight like cats and dogs every time they saw each other. Now they were thick as thieves-all because they wanted to steal the company from him.

What a joke.

“Mom, I know you haven’t been feeling well,” Brandon said, switching to a softer tone, putting on a fake concerned face. “I came back to help you. Our family company can’t end up in the hands of an outsider. You have to believe me. I’ve picked up plenty of skills and strategies overseas these years. I can run this company right.

“I might not know all the ins and outs yet, but Harold’s got my back. We’ve already talked it over. Starting today, we’re taking over the company. And we’re gonna make it bigger and better than ever!”

Brandon had actually been back in town for three days. He’d laid low, working with Harold to hatch their little scheme, figuring out how to seize control.

“This company is mine to give,” Iris shot back, her voice sharp as a knife. “You two don’t get to decide who runs it. I already told you-I’m leaving it to Peyton. And my mind isn’t changing, not for a second!

“If you came back just to fight over the company instead of visiting your own mother, then you shouldn’t have bothered coming at all. This family doesn’t want you here. Get out!”

Inis heart ached. Her own son had come home, and the rst thing he did was demand the company-not ask about her health, not care if she was okay

As a mother, she’d always hated being tough on her kids But after seeing how greedy and heartless they d become? She had no choice left

Did you not hear me? I said get out she roared, her ve cracking with pain You ungrateful brats!

“Peyton will always be my grandson-the grandson I love the most Look at the two of you! What do you think you’re doing? Trying to steal from me? If I hand this company over to you, you’ll run it into the ground in six months flat

Tears pricked her eyes as she stared at her two sons. She worked her fingers to the bone to raise them, to give them the best life possible. She’d sacrificed everything for thein.

So why did they turn out like this? Why did they have to be so selfish, so cruel? It broke her heart.

“Mom, you’ve never trusted me,” Harold whined, puffing out his chest like he had some kind of backbone now that Brandon was there. “But your son is back! You’ve always said he’s the smart one. He’s right here in front of you! Why hand the company to an outsider instead of him?

“You never even gave us a chance! You just assumed we’d mess it up. Why won’t you let us prove ourselves?”
