“Blood doesn’t mean a thing to me. I may be old, but I can still tell who’s being genuine,” Iris said, her voice tired but firm. “Save your fake acts-I’m exhausted. I don’t have the energy for this anymore.”
She didn’t want to keep arguing. After years without seeing Brandon, she’d felt a flicker of longing. But seeing his eyes fixed only on the company? It made her furious-she had nothing left to say to him.
Watching her two sons act like this broke her heart. When had money become their only priority? When had they stopped caring about her?
They talked about the old days-when they’d stuck together through poverty. But what had they done since then? Abandoned her for their own gain.
Iris felt a deep sadness. She blamed herself for spoiling them. She’d worked tirelessly to give them a better life, thinking they’d appreciate it. Instead, they’d grown greedy.
She also regretted neglecting them while building her career. She’d thought giving them material things would make up for lost time-for the hardships they’d endured as kids. But it had only made them crave
more.
If it weren’t for their greed, her health wouldn’t be in ruins. Their arguments had slowly killed her.
Peyton stood silently, feeling useless. He wasn’t a blood Reed anymore-this family fight wasn’t his to join. He had no right to speak up.
“Peyton, I trust you with the company,” Iris said, turning to him with a soft, determined look. “Don’t let me down. Run it carefully. Lead everyone to make it bigger and better.”
“I may be an old woman, but my judgment is still sharp When I believe in someone, I stand by them,” she continued, her eyes glancing at Brandon and Harold. “I want you to make this company so successful that no one can find fault with you. Don’t give anyone a reason to complain!”
Her words were a direct challenge to her sons. Her decision was final-no amount of begging or arguing would change it.
She’d chosen Peyton long ago. Even Brandon’s sudden return couldn’t sway her.
Brandon had actually run the company for a while when he was younger. He’d been far more reliable than Harold, with a natural business sense.
But then he’d married Eleanor. It had been a business arrangement-no love, no connection. They’d fought constantly, their arguments always centered on the company.
Their marriage fell apart. In a fit of anger, Brandon had abandoned the company, his mother, and his wife. He’d fled abroad, leaving everything behind.
Iris had been heartbroken back then. She’d never wanted to lose her son, never wanted him to leave her. No matter what conflicts they’d had, they were mother and son. She’d thought a good talk could smooth things over. But they’d never even tried. He’d just chosen to walk away.
She’d been devastated. He was her son, after all. She couldn’t bear the thought of him leaving, not knowing if he’d ever come back.
So she’d poured her heart out, begging him to stay. But he’d been dead set on leaving-determined to run off with his lover, willing to abandon his family for good
