“If I were you, I’d quit voluntarily,” Brandon snapped, hi voice dripping with venom. “No matter what Iris says, I’d never cling to this family like a leech. You and your mother-you just get more and more greedy!”
He hated Peyton and Eleanor with a passion, his words cutting deep.

“But you weren’t exactly innocent all these years,” Peyton shot back calmly. “My mom made a mistake first, but did the same to her after you married. You’re even. Neither of you has the right to blame the other.
“You’ve been gone for decades. My mom was the one who stayed and took care of Grandma. Do you really think Grandma would let her stay if she didn’t truly accept her?
“I don’t want to argue about this. But whether I stay at the company isn’t up to you.”
Peyton had no patience for their nonsense. Arguing with them felt pointless-they were heartless, only caring about themselves.
If they had an ounce of decency, they’d be worried about Iris’ failing health instead of obsessing over the
company.
He was tired of talking. He just wanted to take Quinn and leave.
Quinn watched him face Harold and Brandon alone, her heart aching. She didn’t know how to help.
This was his family’s mess. Even though they were engaged, she was still an outsider. She couldn’t jump into their fight, no matter how much she wanted to.
Now she understood why Peyton was so tough, so emotionally guarded. Growing up in a family like this had hardened him.
Deep down, he cared about this family. Otherwise, he would’ve walked away long ago. But his loyalty was to Iris-not to the brothers who’d never accepted him.
With Iris’ health so fragile, Quinn worried how much longer she’d last. Once she was gone, this family would fall apart completely. They’d fight over the company until there was nothing left.
“Let’s go,” Quinn said softly, grabbing Peyton’s arm. She couldn’t stand looking at Harold and Brandon’s ugly faces any longer.
On the drive home, Peyton stared out the window, his expression dark and tense. The family drama was weighing on him heavily. He’d already been dealing with Harold alone-now Brandon was back, doubling his troubles.
“Peyton, I know things are crazy right now,” Quinn said tently, reaching for his hand. “They’re all ganging up on you, and I hate that I can’t help more. If there’s anything I can do, just tell me. I’ll be right here with you. I hate seeing you so stressed out over all this.
“I know you’re torn-stuck between your grandma and his mess. I know you want to quit the company, but you can’t. But I believe in you. You’ll find a way to fix thi.”
Quinn wasn’t good at comforting people, but she wante to be his support system. She wanted him to know he wasn’t alone,
The company was already under so much pressure. People outside were waiting to laugh at their family’s chaos. No one expected them to turn on each other like this.

It broke Quinn’s heart. They could’ve banded together to face the outside world. Instead, they were too busy fighting over the company, too greedy to see what really mattered.
If they’d put their egos aside, Peyton could’ve easily supported the whole family. He wouldn’t have minded sharing-if only they’d treated him like one of their own.
But they never had. And they never would.
“I wish you’d quit the company sometimes,” Quinn admitted quietly. “We could build something together, just the two of us. But I know your grandma can’t trust Harold and Brandon with it. I know how hard this is for you.”
