Chapter 43 The Desperate Man’s Revenge

“Of course not.” Quinn rushed to explain. “It was just a small matter. I could’ve handled it myself. I didn’t want to trouble you with everything.”

“I met with Derek because I wanted to collaborate,” she added. “His company had the patents I’ve been wanting to develop. But I never expected things to turn out like this.”

She couldn’t keep relying on others for everything. She’d always been strong–willed. She didn’t want to depend on anyone to solve her problems.

Not then, and certainly not now.

“Did you ever think about the consequences if you hadn’t gotten out of that room safely?” Peyton’s voice turned sharp, filled with accusation.

Quinn felt like a child who’d done something wrong. She didn’t know how to respond.

“From now on, I’ll have someone accompany you to all business events,” Peyton ordered. “You’re not allowed to go alone anymore.”

Quinn had no room to argue. His tone left no space for refusal.

She felt a heavy sense of pressure. Strangely, it didn’t annoy her. If anything, she felt a faint sense of

attachment.

When she was with Felix, he’d never made her feel this way. It was like he’d never truly cared about her.

“Lasked Zach to send you emails about several good partner companies,” Peyton said. “Take a look and contact them directly.”

He’d already taken care of everything–thoughtful and thorough in every detail.

“I know you’re doing this for me,” Quinn said. “But I could’ve found these opportunities on my own. I don’t want anyone to help me.”

Having others assist her made her feel like she was relying on them for everything–especially at work.

Even though her company was gone, she still had her projects. She was confident she could start over.

“I just had Zach find companies that fit your needs,” Peyton clarified. “Whether you succeed depends entirely on you. I won’t interfere.”

Peyton knew where to draw the line. He understood what she liked and what she didn’t.

When it came to her work, he’d only step in when necessary. He wouldn’t meddle otherwise.

Quinn felt more at case after hearing that.

“Thank you.”

“You’re my fiancée,” Peyton said. “No need to be so polite with me from now on.” He hated her constant formalities.

“I won’t be next time,” Quinn replied.

They exchanged a few more words before she hung up the phone.

A week later.

The companies Peyton had recommended were perfect for Quinn–all with great potential for growth.

She’d spent the past few days in her hotel room, sorting through their information and scheduling meetings with their executives.

She had an appointment that evening. This time, she brought Mia along–she’d learned her lesson.

Besides, Mia would be the main person in charge of the project. It would do her good to learn more about it.

When Quinn walked out of the hotel, Mia was waiting for her downstairs.

“Miss Hart, let’s go,” Mia said, full of energy. “I have all the project materials ready. I’m really confident today.”

“So am I.” Quinn smiled, pleased with her assistant’s enthusiasm.

They walked toward the restaurant together. But as soon as they stepped out of the hotel, they saw Derek standing ahead–his forehead still wrapped in gauze.

“Quinn Hart! You ruined my life, didn’t you?” he shouted, his eyes bloodshot with rage. “You dirty bitch! If I can’t have peace, neither will you!”

He charged straight at her, furious.

Mia instinctively stepped in front of Quinn. “What do you want?”

“Get out of the way! This doesn’t concern you!” Derek lunged at them like a madman.

He’d been waiting there for hours–finally, he’d found Quinn.

He had nothing left to lose. He was fearless.

“What are you trying to do?” Quinn warned. “I suggest you calm down. If I could ruin everything for you, I can do it again. Are you sure you want to risk that?”

Derek’s craziness scared her more than the night before, But it was broad daylight–she had a little courage

on her side.

Derek laughed maniacally. “I have nothing left! What do I have to fear?”

“The only thing I never got was you,” he snarled. “I regret not taking you that night. Ruin me–go ahead! Try it!”

I have nothing to lose. Why not fight for what I want?

Once I leave the hospital. I’ll have to pay for my crimes. I’ve snuck out just to find her.

Hatred filled Derek’s eyes. He loathed Quinn with every fiber of his being.

To this day, he still didn’t know who’d helped Quinn destroy him overnight–leaving him penniless and in debt.

But he knew one thing: the person backing her must be extremely powerful.
