Chapter 48 The Interrupted Moment
Finished
Kieran had been spending time with Reginald and Roman these past few days. They’d always been close, and now that they finally had the chance to reconnect, they’d been dining and drinking together nonstop.
Kieran felt completely at ease knowing Quinn was staying at Peyton’s house. He trusted nothing would happen to her.
When Peyton returned home, Mabel handed him his slippers and said, “Mr. Reed, Miss Hart has been staying here these past few days. She didn’t go back to her hotel.”
“Mrs. Reed came by a few days ago and brought Miss Hart some gifts. They got along really well. Mrs. Reed is very satisfied with her,” she added.
Peyton raised an eyebrow–this was unexpected.
He went straight to Quinn’s bedroom.
When he knocked and entered, Quinn looked up in surprise.
You’re back.” she said.
“Yes. I heard my mother came to see you,” Peyton replied, his expression calm.
“Mrs. Reed is very kind. She treated me really well. You don’t have to worry,” Quinn explained quickly, afraid he might be concerned.
“Oh, and about the companies you recommended–I’ve been in touch with them these past few days. They’re all interested in my patents. I’ll be arranging meetings with them soon,” she added.
She felt awkward around Peyton, so she deliberately kept the conversation focused on work.
It was as if they were strangers forced together, making the initial interaction uncomfortable.
But she hoped things would get easier as they spent more time together.
Peyton glanced up and simply nodded.
“I…” Quinn started to say more, but his phone rang, cutting her off.
She fell silent instinctively.
Peyton answered the call.
“Peyton, please come quickly!” a delicate female voice sobbed from the other end. “I twisted my ankle accidentally. I can’t get up. It hurts so much!”
Peyton’s expression darkened instantly. His voice, though still calm, held a hint of urgency. “Don’t move, I’ll be right there.”
He hung up the phone and turned to Quinn. “I have to go take care of something. Go to bed early. No need
to wait for me.”

Quinn nodded, saying nothing.

It was clear this woman was important to him–otherwise, he wouldn’t have rushed out like that right after the call.
But Quinn knew she had no right to ask questions, nor should she interfere.
Even so, an unfamiliar, unpleasant feeling stirred in her chest–something she couldn’t quite explain.
She quickly opened her laptop, trying to distract herself from the call she’d just overheard.
Just then. Mia called.
“Miss Hart. I have to tell you something urgent,” Mia said anxiously.
You asked me to contact those companies about collaborations. They were all really interested in our patents at first, but Felix has been spreading rumors. One company even refused to work with us, saying you have a bad character.
“On top of that, people are gossiping about you behind your back. They’re saying you betrayed Felix, that you’re heartless for making his mother have a heart attack–and that you have no filial piety at all,” Mia explained, clearly frustrated.
Quinn didn’t need to think hard to know Felix wasn’t acting alone. Lila must have been involved too.
“Don’t worry, Mia.” Quinn said calmly, not the least bit flustered. “Anyone who believes those rumors isn’t genuinely interested in collaborating with us. That company wouldn’t have been a good fit anyway–so it’s no loss.”
“I’ve already lined up a meeting with another company. I really like their vision, and I think we’d work well together. We’ll go meet them tomorrow,” she added.
She’d already planned this out, so she felt confident and at ease.
What Felix did didn’t matter to her.
He was getting more and more childish–resorting to such underhanded tactics. But no matter how much he slandered her, she knew she’d never make mistakes at work. She had complete faith in herself.
“But that’s so unfair of Felix!” Mia exclaimed. “He’s the one who cheated first! He did so many terrible things. How dare he badmouth you like this?”
“Calm down. In the end, he’ll only end up hurting himself,” Quinn said.
She truly didn’t care about Felix’s antics.
Instead of wasting time on someone so irrelevant, she’d rather focus on her work.
A week later…
Quinn hadn’t seen Peyton since he left that day.
She couldn’t help but wonder.

Is he staying to take care of that woman with the twisted ankle?
But she quickly told herself it wasn’t any of her business.
They weren’t even engaged yet. He was free to see other people if he wanted.
