Chapter 53 The Past Preserved
Yet Quinn had never come back.
They’d felt disappointed, of course. But she was their daughter. Now that she’d returned, all the past grievances faded away.
Quinn rushed upstairs, eager to see her childhood bedroom.
Peyton followed closely behind. His cold gaze softened as he scanned the room.
“This is where Quinn grew up, Peyton,” Doris explained warmly.

“These are her old awards. That cabinet is filled with her favorite dolls. She even named every single one when she was little!
“Here are all her princess dresses and favorite clothes. I’ve also kept her toys over the years. I could never bear to throw any of it away. I wanted her to have these memories when she grew up.”
Seeing her cozy, familiar room, Quinn’s eyes grew teary again.
Doris was so thoughtful and gentle. She’d kept all these things in perfect condition. They looked as good as
new.
They’d raised her like a true princess. But when she grew up, she met Felix.
She’d changed then, determined to marry him and start a family. She’d thought she’d never love anyone else.
Now, it all seemed silly.
Quinn’s heart ached with regret for letting her
for letting her parents down.
“You’ve kept the room so nicely, Mrs. Hart,” Peyton commented sincerely.
He’d been listening attentively. He wanted to know everything about Quinn.
“Quinn, stay here with Peyton for a bit,” Doris said. “Your father and I will go finish dinner. We cooked everything ourselves. I’ll call you when it’s ready!”
Since their families had been close for generations, Quinn’s mother and Peyton’s mother were like best friends-they often played cards together.
Calling him “Peyton” was a term of endearment.
They were completely satisfied with him-they knew his family well. Marrying their children would only strengthen their bond.
After her parents left, Quinn quickly pulled out a chair. “Please sit.”
Being alone with Peyton made her feel awkward. She didn’t know what to do or say.
She sat down too, fidgeting with her fingers.

“I plan to stay here for a while to spend time with my parents,” she said suddenly. “If you have work to take care of at the company, you can go back first. I’ll let you know when I’m ready to return!”
It just occurred to her that Peyton might have urgent matters to attend to.
But Peyton had come specifically because he knew she’d be staying.
He’d already arranged all his work and planned to stay with her the entire time.
“Don’t worry about me. Just tell me when you want to go back,” he replied.
They sat in her room for a while until they heard her parents calling them down for dinner.
The family sat around the table, laughing and chatting. Quinn sat next to Doris, while Kieran and Peyton drank with James.
This was the scene Quinn had dreamed of so many times-dining with her parents and brother. It was finally coming true.
“Peyton, does your grandmother know you’re back?” Doris asked during the meal. “I visited her a few days ago, and she kept asking about you. She said you must come see her as soon as you’re home.
“After dinner, go buy her some gifts and pay her a visit. She misses you terribly!”
Their families lived close by.
But Peyton had been working out of town for years, too busy to visit often. He’d always been close to his grandmother, and she thought of him constantly.
“I’ll do that, Mrs. Hart. I’ll take Quinn with me later,” Peyton replied.
Quinn panicked.
We have to go to Peyton’s house too?
This is happening so fast. I am not ready.
But then she remembered their earlier conversation. They’d agreed to visit his grandmother before their engagement.
Quinn felt a little dazed. It seemed like just yesterday she’d broken up with Felix. Now, she was about to get engaged.
“Alright, let’s finish eating quickly,” she said.
After dinner with her parents, Quinn and Peyton prepared to leave.
“Are you nervous?” Peyton asked, noticing her unease.
She looked like she was being forced into something.
“Well, sooner or later I have to meet the family,” Quinn joked, trying to sound casual. “We’re getting engaged soon-visiting your grandmother was inevitable. Don’t worry about me.”
