Chapter 90 Eleanor’s Defense

“This is my business, Uncle Harold. You don’t need to concern yourself with it,” Peyton said sharply. “If you think I’m incompetent, come at me directly. But stop spouting nonsense in front of Grandma.”

His top priority was Iris’ health. He refused to let her get worked up over their petty squabbles.

“Mr. Harold Reed, I know exactly what’s going on with Peyton,” Quinn spoke up, her voice steady. “He’s lived with guilt all these years. But feelings aren’t like business deals. I support his choice fully.

“I didn’t know the whole story before. But now that I do, I’m ready to stand by him through it all. After all, I am his fiancée.

“Ever since I joined this family, I’ve known you might not approve of me. That’s fine. I have no intention of disrupting your lives. But Mrs. Iris Reed is getting on in years. All this fighting is taking a toll on her health. Can’t you just stop?”

Quinn had reached her breaking point. She couldn’t stand by and watch them bully Peyton any longer-not on Iris’ birthday, of all days.

“Who do you think you are, acting like you own this family?” Harold snarled. “This is none of your business!”

Harold’s whole family glowered at Quinn, their hostility palpable. They’d never liked her to begin with, but now she’d dared to challenge them head-on-and in front of everyone, no less.

They were wary of crossing Peyton, of course. They still needed the company’s money to survive. But Quinn was fair game. Even if Iris doted on her, her past was common knowledge. As far as they were concerned, she was far too good for the Reeds.

“You little nobody!” Donna shrieked. “Storming into our home and telling us what to do? Get over yourself!”

“I heard you and your ex-fiancé had a huge falling-out,” Harold sneered, joining in. “A woman like you, thinking she can marry into the Reed family? Keep dreaming!”

They tag-teamed Quinn, hurling insults back and forth, their faces twisted with malice.

Just then, the front door swung open, and Eleanor stepped inside. She’d been at an important gala that evening, but she’d rushed back as soon as it ended, determined not to miss Iris’ birthday.

And the first thing she heard was Quinn being ganged up on.

“Marry into the Reed family? What’s wrong with that?” Eleanor’s voice boomed through the room, sharp and fiery. “If you can marry into this family, then Quinn is more than worthy-you two aren’t even in the same league!”

“What makes the Reed family so special, anyway?” she snapped, leveling a glare at Harold and Donna. “Having people like you in this family-that’s what’s embarrassing us! What a disgrace to our family name!”

Eleanor tore into them, holding nothing back. She laid into the three of them so thoroughly that they couldn’t even stammer out a reply.

This family needed someone like her-someone who wouldn’t back down from a fight, Otherwise, these

bullies would just keep pushing their luck, getting more and more arrogant.

“Looks like I was right to come home,” she fumed, wrapping an arm around Quinn’s shoulders protectively. “Leaving Quinn to take this kind of abuse from you people! Fine-from now on, we’re not coming back. Let’s cut all ties between our two families!”

Then she turned to Iris, her tone softening a little. “Iris, you don’t have anything to tie you down here anymore. You don’t run the company. Peyton handles most of the business now. Why don’t you come live with us? You can see Peyton and Quinn whenever you want.

“Let this bunch do whatever they want. It’s none of our business. We’re done with them.”

Eleanor had a fiery temper. She’d always been quick to anger, but she was also fair and reasonable. And she loved’ Iris dearly.

She was determined to put an end to this chaos once and for all. She wanted nothing more than to get Iris away from this toxic environment.

Peyton nodded in agreement. This was the perfect solution. He’d been wanting to get Iris out of here for ages. Most of the company’s projects were based in his city now, anyway. The headquarters might still be here, but there was barely any real business left for Harold to meddle with.

It had been Peyton’s plan all along. He’d deliberately shifted the company’s focus to his city to keep Harold’s greedy hands off the projects-and to stop him from spying on every little thing he did.

“Absolutely,” Iris said without hesitation, her voice cold as she glared at Harold’s family. She wanted nothing more to do with them.

She’d raised both her sons single-handedly, and she’d always loved them dearly. If they hadn’t turned out to be such greedy, selfish people, she would never have dreamed of cutting them off. But they’d left her with no choice.
