“She had a fever when she woke up this morning,” the maid explained. “By noon, her face was bright red. It looked really serious.”

Peyton headed straight for her bedroom and banged on the door.

“Wendy, what are you doing now? You’re sick and won’t take medicine. What’s wrong with you?” he snapped. “If they hadn’t called me, no one would know how bad things are in here.

“Open the door right now. I need to see how you’re doing!”

He was furious, his tone sharp and unforgiving.

Wendy heard his voice and hurried to unlock the door. She stared up at him with big, pitiful eyes.

“Peyton, you’re back?” she whispered. “Aren’t you supposed to be at the manor celebrating your grandma’s birthday? Why did they call you here?”

Getting him to come back was exactly her plan all along.

Peyton saw right through her. He knew exactly what she was up to, but he couldn’t just walk away.

“Wendy, you have a high fever. Why won’t you go to the hospital? Why haven’t you eaten? And you drank all this alcohol?” he scolded angrily. “What are you trying to do-kill yourself?”

Wendy felt a surge of satisfaction.

Deep down, Peyton still cares about me. Herushed over from the manor in the middle of the night—he’d probably already been asleep.

“Peyton, I’m fine. I don’t feel that bad,” she lied, her voice trembling. “I just felt a little down today. I don’t want to go to the hospital. The smell of disinfectant makes me sick!”

“I stayed in the hospital for so long before. I have a phobia now. Please don’t make me go back,” she begged, tears streaming down her face, looking both pitiful and desperate.)

But Peyton had lost his patience with her. She was being more unreasonable by the day, always scheming. He hated this feeling.

He stepped forward and touched her forehead. It was burning hot.

He sighed in frustration.

Why is she being so stubborn? She’s seriously ill and needs medical care.

He had no idea what to do with her.

Peyton stood up, his voice cold. “Wendy, are you trying to die? It’s too late to call a family doctor. They’re all off work. You’re coming to the hospital with me right now.”

He couldn’t understand her anymore.

“Peyton, I drank some water. I’ll feel better after sleeping,” she pleaded. “Can you stay with me? I really don’t want to go to the hospital. I’m terrified of them.”

She looked so delicate and hopeless, refusing to budge.

Wendy felt deeply touched that Peyton had come to see her. He must have me in his heart. Otherwise, why would he rush over so worriedly just because I have a fever? He still cares about me.

Quinn might be engaged to him, but she doesn’t mean anything. He’s only marrying her to please his family!

Wendy kept telling herself this, trying to calm her racing heart.

She’d told the maid to call Peyton. She’d wanted to test if he’d leave Quinn and Iris to come to her.

And he had. She’d been right about him.

“That’s enough!” Peyton shouted.

“If you don’t get treatment right away, you could get complications. Pack your things and let’s go. Don’t make me carry you there by force.”

Peyton had been more than patient with her. He truly cared about her well-being. He needed to make sure she got better-only then could he find peace of mind.

In the end, Wendy had no choice but to go with him to the hospital.

They were taken straight to the emergency room. Her condition was too serious to wait. The doctor prescribed a fever-reducing injection right away.

In the private hospital room, Wendy lay weakly in bed. The prolonged high fever had left h

unconscious.

Peyton couldn’t leave her alone there in the middle of the night. He sat down on the sofa beside her, watching silently with a blank expression.

Thankfully, the hospital treatment worked. After the injection, Wendy’s fever broke quickly. Her complexion improved, no longer as pale as before.

Peyton finally felt relieved. He could now leave with a clear conscience.
