Chapter 99 A Setup in the Headlines
Dawn broke.
Peyton had stayed up all night with her. It was more tiring than his usual late nights dealing with paperwork.
But he had no choice-he owed her that much.
He planned to head straight to the office. He’d call the maid to come stay with her.
Finished
But just as he stood up, he heard her voice behind him. “Peyton, don’t leave me,” she pleaded. “I need you.”
“Peyton, I hate this hospital so much. I can’t stay here alone. Please stay with me,” she begged.
She lay in bed, pouting pitifully, tears streaming down her face.
People were at their weakest when sick. She was sure Peyton would feel sorry for her. She didn’t think she was being unreasonable at all.
“Wendy, I have so much work to take care of,” he said firmly. “Can’t you be reasonable for once? Stop being so childish.
“Do you realize how dangerous your actions were yesterday? You had a high fever and refused to go to the hospital. Were you trying to kill yourself? If this happens again, I won’t help you.”
Peyton was furious about what had happened. He was also deeply disappointed in her. He always took perfect care of her, but she kept testing his limits.
His patience had its limits. If she pulled something like this again, he wouldn’t be able to stand it. He wouldn’t waste any more words on her.
“Peyton, don’t be mad at me,” she sobbed. “I know I was wrong. I didn’t want to come to the hospital because I’m scared of them. I don’t need a family doctor. I’m terrified of all doctors.”
Wendy cried loudly, her voice full of grievance.
The old Peyton had always been patient with her, no matter how much she acted out. He’d never shouted at
her like this before.
But today, he’d yelled at her just for not going to the hospital. She couldn’t accept it.
“That’s enough. Stop crying,” he said coldly. “I’m leaving. I’ll send someone to take care of you.”
With that, Peyton turned around and walked out. He couldn’t stand to look at her anymore.
Wendy lay in bed, staring at his retreating figure in disbelief,
She knew her words meant nothing now. His heart had changed. He belonged to someone else.
But she kept asking herself.
Why?

Chapter 99 A Setup in the Headlines
Haven’t I sacrificed enough for this man? Why does he get to be happy with another woman?
“Get out! All of you, get out!”
Finished
Wendy couldn’t contain her anger. She flew into a rage and shouted at the maids who entered the room.
She was trembling all over, her voice shrill with emotion. She could barely control herself.
“Get out, do you hear me?”
The maids hesitated. Peyton had sent them and specifically told them not to leave her side.
If they left now, how would they explain it to him?
Meanwhile, Peyton left the hospital and went straight to the office. He’d already come this far from the manor. Going back would be too much trouble.
Quinn was still at her parents’ house. They’d planned to go back and spend another day with Iris together. Now, that would have to wait.
Peyton sent Quinn a text telling her he was back in the city.
Quinn felt confused.
We’ve made plans. Why did he suddenly return?
But she didn’t ask any questions. She figured he must have urgent work matters. She didn’t want to disturb him.
Thirty minutes later, Peyton was trending on all social media platforms.
News outlets were exploding with headlines:
“Reed Group Heir Peyton Reed Spotted at Hospital with Wendy Parker Late at Night-Could Wedding Bells Be Ringing?”
“Reed Group CEO Peyton Reed to Marry Wendy Parker-Engagement Announcement Imminent!”
“Congratulations to Peyton Reed on His Upcoming Nuptials!”
Peyton found out about it quickly. His assistant rushed to report the news. They’d gone to the hospital in the middle of the night. Why had this story suddenly blown up-and become headline news?
In just a few minutes, the comments had skyrocketed. It was more popular than a celebrity announcement.
Someone was definitely pulling the strings behind the scenes.
The timing was suspicious. The incident had happened late at night. The hospital had been quiet-hardly anyone around. So how had the paparazzi managed to get photos of them together?
