"What?"
Lorelei's knees buckled. If Harold hadn't caught her, she would have collapsed onto the floor.
"She's at the hospital, right? I'm heading there right now." Lorelei immediately tried to rush toward the door.
"Don't panic."
Harold hurried after her, keeping a steadying hand on her waist while he dialed the surgical team. "Prep the OR according to the primary protocol we established."
"Protocol?"
Sitting in the passenger seat, Lorelei turned to Harold with a look of utter confusion.
"Yeah."
Harold nodded, explaining seriously. "Grandma's health has been rapidly declining. For the past few years, I've been collaborating with an overseas medical institute to develop a viable surgical plan."
"The reason I never told you was because I didn't want to give you false hope if the plan failed."
"And now?" Lorelei opened her mouth, her voice cracking. "Is Grandma going to be okay?"
"I won't let anything happen to her." Harold reached out with his right hand, tightly grasping Lorelei's icy fingers in an attempt to comfort her. "Lori, trust me."
"Okay."
Lorelei nodded emphatically, but the sheer terror still made the tears stream uncontrollably down her face.
Her mind was completely blank. Harold had to practically carry her into the hospital, and it wasn't until they were standing outside the operating room doors that she finally snapped back to reality.
"Dr. Houston."
Hearing the voice, Lorelei turned her head and saw Felicia Bishop standing right across from them.
"Lorelei, it's been a long time," Felicia greeted her with a warm smile. "Don't worry, your grandmother is already in the OR, and our mentor just arrived as well."
"Thank you."
Lorelei stared at her, unsure of what she was feeling, her throat unbearably dry.
"It's nothing." Felicia then turned to Harold, looking concerned. "Dr. Houston, you haven't slept in two nights. Are you sure you can handle being in the OR for this long?"
Eleanor's surgery involved her brain; they might have to open her skull.
A major surgery like this would take at least seven or eight hours.
"I'll be fine."
Harold guided Lorelei to sit down on one of the waiting room chairs. He looked over at Tanner Bellamy, who was standing nearby, and instructed, "Keep an eye on your sister."
"Of course."
Tanner nodded, his expression grave. "Harold, Grandma's life is in your hands."
