As soon as she pushed open the glass door, the salty sea breeze rushed in and wrapped around her. It smelled just like the ocean—fresh and wild—and instead of being overwhelming, it actually made her feel like she could finally breathe.
The villa sat right on top of a cliff, and her bedroom had the best view in the house. From her balcony, the sea stretched out forever, impossibly blue. The midday sun scattered across the water, sparkling so brightly it was like someone had thrown a handful of diamonds over the waves.
Right below her balcony was a huge infinity pool, the water so blue and clear it almost looked fake. Neat green grass circled the pool, tidy and perfect, and then, just past that, the ground fell away into the steep cliff. Far below, the deep blue waves crashed again and again against massive black rocks, sending up sprays of foamy white water. The roar of the ocean was steady and powerful, but somehow, it made her feel calm.
Emmy leaned against the balcony railing and let the wind mess up her short hair. She stood there a long time, watching seagulls skim the surface of the sea and a far-off sailboat turn into a tiny dot on the horizon.
Eventually, a chill crept into her bones. She headed back inside, found a thin blanket, and wrapped it around herself. Then she went back out to the balcony and curled up in a white wicker nest chair tucked into the corner.
She hugged her knees and held her phone, staring at the screen. Five minutes had ticked by. She wasn’t ready to give up yet, so she tried again. This time, she typed in her grandfather’s memorial date.

Emmy let out a sigh and finally gave up. She dropped her phone onto the soft cushion beside her.
The chair swayed gently, the sun was warm, and the sound of the waves below was like a lullaby. Emmy buried her face in the blanket, eyelids growing heavier with every breath. Not long after, she drifted off to sleep, curled up in the hanging chair.
When she woke up, the sky outside was pitch black. Emmy rubbed her eyes, still half-asleep, and reached for her phone. The screen glowed harsh and white, making her squint.
The wait was over. She could try the passcode again. Just as she was about to, the phone buzzed in her hand. Two words flashed on the screen: Mom calling.
Emmy swiped to answer.
“Emmy? What are you up to? Have you been eating properly since I left?”
Just hearing her mom’s voice made everything feel a little less uncertain. Emmy softened her tone, “I just woke up. I’ve been eating, don’t worry. The chef here is really great.”
