Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 528

This was her dance troupe's problem, and she would solve it herself. She couldn't drag the Remingtons into it.

Just then, a sharp voice cut through the air from the courtyard gate. "Genevieve, what are you doing?"

"Speak of the devil," Genevieve muttered, raising an eyebrow and scoffing toward the gate. "Well, well, if it isn't the princess herself. Sorry, but my humble abode might be a bit too shabby for your royal highness."

"Genevieve, have you lost your mind? Can't you tell friend from foe? Chatting with an outsider like this?" Isla snapped at Genevieve, but her eyes were fixed on Emma.

The outsider, the enemy, was obviously Emma.

Genevieve just smiled sweetly. "You're right. So you should probably leave."

Isla faltered. "What do you mean?"

"You said not to talk to outsiders, so what are you doing here? Please, be on your way." Genevieve extended her hand in a mock gesture of invitation.

"You…" Isla sputtered, pointing at her own chest in disbelief. "You're calling me an outsider?"

"What else would you be? You have nothing to do with our family," Genevieve retorted.

"Then she's not an outsider?" Isla jabbed a finger toward Emma. "How many years have I known you? And how long have you known her?"

"She's my sister," Genevieve declared, linking her arm through Emma's.

"You're a Remington, she's a Bennett. How is she your sister?" Isla demanded, looking like she was about to explode.

Emma found it odd. With her, Isla was always proud and composed, but around Genevieve, she was like a stick of dynamite with a short fuse.

"Oh, I'm sure your intentions are pure as the driven snow," Genevieve said sarcastically, linking arms with Emma again. "But I'm not falling for it. I'll go, but only if my sister comes with me."

Emma had no intention of going. She patted Genevieve's hand. "Maybe next time. I already have plans with my cousin for dinner. He's coming to pick me up."

"Alright then, sis. I'll treat you some other time, just the two of us." Genevieve let go of her arm.

Emma walked around the low wall to her own house next door. As she went, she heard Isla's voice behind her. "So, when are you going to treat me?"

Genevieve made a sound of annoyance. "Is that a mosquito buzzing? It's almost fall. I'm going to go change."

"You…" Isla was once again left speechless with rage.

Emma shook her head to herself. Her guess was right. Despite all of Genevieve's complaints about Isla, they were clearly frenemies.
