Chapter 48
Amelia’s POV
Everyone just stared at me.
No one moved. No one even breathed. It was like the whole world had stopped
I could still feel the power rushing through me wild and hot, running under my skin like fire and light all mixed together My heart was beating so fast it hurt, but I didn’t care. I could finally breathe again.
I looked down and saw paws where my hands should be. Real paws. Huge, silver-white with streaks of faint purple light that shimmered every time I moved. I could feel the air brushing through fur that belonged to me.
“She has a wolf,” someone whispered from the crowd, voice shaking.
“Is that really her?”
“It’s her wolf… Goddess, she’s beautiful.”
The words hit me one by one until I almost couldn’t stand it. For so long, I’d been called wolfless. Broken. Defective. Now they were all looking at me like I was something impossible.
Then I heard her.
“Took you long enough to notice me, sweetheart.”
Her voice slid through my mind like a warm spark – familiar, teasing, impossible to ignore.
Lyra?
A small laugh echoed inside me. Who else? You finally stopped doubting yourself long enough for me to get through.
Hearing this, I wished I could cry.
I thought we could never shift, I said quietly to her. I’d already resigned myself to never seeing you. How could I suddenly- Hey, she cut in, her voice half laughter, half scold in my mind. You wound me. How can you blame me when we had all those injuries to heal from? I told you before we’re powerful. I just needed time to fix what they broke, didn’t I?
Her tone shifted – bold and playful now. Listen carefully, because I’m only saying this once more: we are the most powerful she-wolf out there. Our abilities are unmatched. So stop acting like a scared little pup. You’re allowed to be confident. Arrogant, even. This frightened, timid act? So not classy.
Despite everything, a small laugh rumbled out of me. It felt strange coming from this wolf body, but it was real. You sound the same as always.
Obviously. Lyra sounded smug. Someone has to keep you from overthinking everything.
Her confidence bled straight into me, and the power between us steadied always belonged.
no longer wild or painful. It felt right, like it had
I’m sorry I made you wait so long, Lyra said after a pause, her voice softer now. But from this point on, you’ll never face anything without me.
I took a deep breath. Then let’s show them who we really are.
