Exit the Catfights Enter the Empire novel Chapter 13

Evelyn let out a long breath, her suspended heart settling back into her chest as she slowly regained her rationality.

Vickie and Valerie truly were sisters; the methods they used were exactly the same.

All along, she had wanted to ask Valerie one question. *Did you regret it? Losing your life just to frame me—did you regret it?*

Evelyn thought Valerie must have regretted it. Even though she succeeded in severing her bond with Xavier, ensuring that even when she married the man she loved, he wouldn't spare her a second glance—Valerie must have regretted it.

You only have one life. Once you're dead, you have nothing.

She stood on the roof for a while longer. After the crowd below dispersed, she prepared to leave, but was stopped at the door by Xavier.

"Evelyn."

"You heard everything clearly just now. This was all directed and acted out by Vickie. It has nothing to do with me." Evelyn didn't look at him. Her gaze fell on the empty air, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. "Actually, it would have been easy for you to investigate this matter. But you didn't want to. As long as the evidence pointed to me, you couldn't wait to convict me. You never cared what the truth actually was. In your heart, Evelyn Lawler is guilty, unforgivably guilty."

Xavier frowned. He was just about to speak when Zandra walked over and said cautiously, "Mr. Farrell, Vickie wants to see you."

Xavier stared at Evelyn for a long moment before finally following Zandra to the hospital room.

Evelyn wasn't surprised at all. She smiled, though at this point she didn't even know what she was smiling at.

...

Vickie wasn't seriously injured, just badly frightened. Her face was pale, and she was still reeling from the shock.

"Xavier..." Vickie looked at him cautiously, stammering, "I'm sorry, it was my fault this time. I was just so angry. Evelyn hurt my face and didn't even apologize. I wasn't thinking straight when I decided to do this..."

"Vickie." Xavier cut off her rambling, his voice flat. "Do you know why I keep you by my side? Because of this face, and because you're reasonably well-behaved. I hope you can stay well-behaved, okay?"

Xavier's attitude wasn't harsh at all, but Vickie looked as if she had been terrified.

"Okay?" Xavier asked again, his tone growing gentler.

Vickie shuddered, nodded vigorously, and promised, "I'll definitely be good."
